Apple Launches Revised iOS 5.1.1 Build for GSM iPhone 4

Apple updated iOS to version 5.1.1 earlier this month and only added minor features to it, but it?s only now that the update comes to the GSM iPhone 4. The Next Web is reporting that iPhone hacker iH8sn0w posted details about the update on his Twitter account.

The new version of the build is 9B208 and not 9B206 as expected, used in the previous version. We?re not sure that the update brings, other than the usual connectivity and performance upgrades, although it?s interesting to see this release now, just hours after Absinthe brought untethered jailbreaking to iOS 5.1.1 devices, including the new iPad. The GSM iPhone 4 users have already upgrade to 5.1.1, but the problem is that this update is not vulnerable to the untethered jailbreak offered by pod2g.

If you still want the update, you can get it via OTA or iTunes. I?m sure that pod2g and co will find a way to also make the untethered jailbreak work with the iPhone 4 GSM with iOS 5.1.1 new update, but that may take some more days?

(AP) ? The Cannes film festival on Saturday wrapped up the movies in competition wading deep in the Mississippi river with "Mud," a heart-wrenching, Mark Twain-influenced tale of a teenage boy searching for the meaning of life in a harsh world and starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.

With snake bites, shootouts, and a happy ending, it is proudly ? even blatantly ? inspired by the bard of the Mississippi. Stellar performances from 15-year-old Tye Sheridan ? who starred in last year's Palme d'Or winner "The Tree of Life" ? and McConaughey separate it from a pack of films in competition set in the colorful American South.

Director David Nichols' third film was the culmination of his film work so far and a decade of effort. The 33-year-old managed to scrape enough money together thanks to the critical success of his previous two pictures: 2007's "Shotgun Stories," and last year's award-winning "Take Shelter."

The story of young Ellis on his search for a parental role model borrows from the sacrifice and friendship themes of Twain's classic "Huckleberry Finn," whose fatherless main character embarks on a Mississippi odyssey of self-discovery.

Nichols said Twain's bittersweet tales immortalizing the "mile-wide tide" of the Mississippi river have stayed with him since he first read them when he was young. He's frankly unapologetic about the obvious influence: "If you're going to steal from someone, steal from someone really intelligent. And I stole from Mark Twain."

Young actor Jacob Lofland, who played Ellis' best friend, Neckbone, testified to Twain's influence. Tutored on the book, Lofland recognized parts of the work in the films script. He said, only semi-jokingly, "I found out that a lot of stuff (from the novel) just wandered onto the script. We had a word with (Nichols) about that."

McConaughey plays the eponymous character, the woebegone Mud, who is hiding on a Mississippi island from vengeful bounty hunters after shooting a man in Texas. Madly in love with Witherspoon's unreliable, smoldering blond Juniper he enlists the support of Ellis and Neckbone to help win her love. McConaughey's performance has wowed critics at the festival.

The Oscar-winning Witherspoon, who spent an hour in a hot, packed room with journalists despite being heavily pregnant, was born in Louisiana and took the relatively small role because it felt like home to her.

"There are very few movies about the American South that are accurate," she said.

"Mud" ? the Cannes's official competition's last entry ? joins "Lawless" and "The Paperboy" on the list of Southern films at the festival. Nichols explained the phenomenon simply: "Well, Southerners are good story-tellers."

Movie Review: 'Men in Black 3? | Movies & TV | Arts ...

Threequel is one too many

Men In Black 3

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Cast: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson
Running Time: 105 minutes
Rating: PG-13

The first ?Men In Black? was an instant comedic classic. The premise has always been fun: A CIA-like, covert ops agency that keeps tabs on bizarre alien life forms that live among us and runs pest control on the more dangerous and ill-intentioned ones. Its brother in concept was ?Ghostbusters.?

The main foundation that the MIB movies stood on, however, was always the comic chemistry between leads Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. So what could possibly go wrong with this formula? Threequel-itis, that?s what. MIB 1 was great, MIB 2 not so much, MIB 3?just not cuttin? the mustard.

Boris The Animal (Jemaine Clement of ?Flight of the Conchords? fame) is a particularly hideous alien, replete with zipper-like skin harboring dart-throwing killer ticks, reminiscent of the nasty face-hugger larvae in the ?Alien? film series. He gets broken out of prison with a smuggled time-travel device and goes back to the future looking for Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), who was responsible for putting Boris on lockdown and lopping off an arm.

\>");

There ensues extensive time travel by Agent J (Will Smith) to help and protect partner K. The act of returning to the year 1969 turns up a younger version of Agent K, played by Josh Brolin. The whole movie is a time-travel bonanza, to eliminate the ghastly Boris before he can sic his ticks on Agent K.

The trappings are all too familiar by now: the black suits, the sunglasses, the cool cars, and the ?neuralyzer? that erases ordinary people?s memories after they?ve crossed paths with the aliens among us. It feels like all these things have maybe overstayed their welcome a bit. What?s the phrase? ?It?s so 2002.?

Whereas MIB aliens have always been freaky and somewhat disgusting in a friendly, fun sort of way, Boris The Animal?s ticks crawl around in the gore genre. The original MIB was kid-friendly, more or less, but Boris is pure gross-out and nowhere near as funny as ?Edgar,? the giant galactic cockroach antagonist played by Vincent D?Onofrio in the original film.

Will Smith (R) and Josh Brolin in the sci-fi action-comedy 'Men In Black 3,' a film about a time-traveling agent who changes the future.(Wilson Webb/ Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.)

Will Smith (R) and Josh Brolin in the sci-fi action-comedy 'Men In Black 3,' a film about a time-traveling agent who changes the future.(Wilson Webb/ Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.)

Again, the best thing about a MIB film is normally the odd-couple chemistry of Smith the clown and Jones the straight man. The original had novelty, plus great situations like deadpan-meister Jones saying to an alien bug in full-threat display, ?Put up your arms and all your flippers.?

Here, even the effusiveness of Smith and the taciturn stoicism of Jones have gone a tad stale. Not to mention other script clunkers such as: ?You?re going to be late for your meeting with the Viagrans. They have a revolutionary new pill.?

To list some of the good things, while 3-D is rapidly becoming less and less interesting due to the way it skyrockets ticket prices, the 3-D effects are good here. There?s also the funny concept of Chinese restaurants secretly substituting alien fish species on the menu.

The best thing about the movie, however, is Josh Brolin playing a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones. Physically, they?re dead ringers for each other, and Brolin clearly had an actor?s dream experience of studying and interpreting Tommy Lee.

All in all, it looks good, it has good concepts, and it should have killed as a comedic film. One waits for the payoff. And waits. Boris is fairly gross. The rest of it is fairly boring.

Hair Loss in Women and the Inter Relationship with Diet and Stress

?

Dandruff and baldness are both circumstances associated with zinc oxide deficiency. Zinc is a mineral that promotes mobile reproduction and tissue development and repair. Zinc also functions in the maintenance of the oil-secreting glands attached to hair roots. The reference daily consumption of zinc oxide is 15 milligrams for the average adult.

?

Good sources of zinc oxide include meals of animal origin, including seafood. Egg and use products also supply zinc oxide in smaller amounts. Whole-grain products, nuts, seed products, and legumes contain zinc oxide, but in a form that is less available to the body system.

?

Protein is needed by every mobile in the body system, including the cells needed in normal hair regrowth. Without sufficient aminoacids consumption, the body system cannot efficiently make new hair to replace the hair that has shed. Protein comes from meat, poultry, fish, eggs, use products etc. All of these important contain complete protein or protein that contains all nine essential meats necessary for optimal health and wellness. Plant meals such as dried beans, seed products, nuts, feed products, and many vegetables also contain aminoacids, but not in the complete form. Eating a variety of plant meals helps to ensure you receive sufficient amounts of meats.

?

Water is one of the most essential nutrients essential for life. Proper hydration is an important aspect in healthier hair and in promoting health. The recommended amount of water to drink each day is 64 ounces or eight 8-ounce glasses. Every mobile and every system in the body system uses water to function properly. Water is involved in the transport of vitamins, minerals, meats, and many other nutrients.?

Other Reasons for Tresses Loss

?

Nutritional deficiencies can be a reason for faster hair reducing or short-term baldness. Conditions may contribute to poor nourishment and cause baldness as a side effect includes eating disorders such as anorexia. Anorexia can cause severe malnutrition and cause a high proportion of hair roots to stop their development cycle. After several months, these hairs shed and the entire human is not equipped nutritionally to grow back new ones. Normal hair regrowth returns with sufficient nourishment consumption.?

?

Rapid weight-loss is another reason for faster hair reducing. Dropping weight too quickly and/or participating in a fad diet that is not nutritionally sound can cause imbalances in the body system and cause increased hair reducing. Following a healthy weight-loss program can prevent this from happening.?

Summary

?

Most cases of balding or permanent baldness results from genetic disposition or heredity influences. Momentary baldness or hair reducing can result from poor nourishment, among other circumstances. Good nourishment can be potentially beneficial to the health of your head.?

Hot 97's annual Summer Jam lineup just got a little shadier: On Thursday morning (May 24), Eminem phoned into the New York hip-hop radio station to announce that his group Slaughterhouse will join Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and 2 Chainz at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on June 3.

This will be the first time Slaughterhouse will perform at the all-star hip-hop throwdown, so what advice does Marshall have for Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce da 5'9"? "Just be themselves," Eminem told Hot 97 and "Hip Hop Squares" host Peter Rosenberg. "I really feel like this group — hip-hop needs this, man, and I think people will see when this album comes out too."

King Mathers didn't hint at any surprise appearances. He is currently in the studio. "Right now, I'm finishing up everything on the Slaughterhouse album and kinda getting into my next record a little bit," he shared.

Em wouldn't dish any further on his upcoming seventh studio album, only saying that he is just "starting to toy" with the LP. Before that, SH will be dropping their Shady Records debut, Welcome to: Our House, in June.

"The album is done," Royce da 5'9" told MTV News on May 9 from the set of their "My Life" video. "In terms of vocal recording, we're done. Marshall is still in the process of mixing; we still got a couple of records that we're missing. We're on pace for June. Worst-case scenario, we're looking at July, but it's definitely coming — 100 percent."

Editor's Selections: Political Economy and the Grave, and Uniform Colors

    ShareShare ?ShareEmail ?PrintPrint

Two selections for your holiday weekend (Memorial Day, US):

    • Can grave goods tell us about the political economy of a group? At Bones Don?t Lie, Katy Meyers reports on recent research that examines what burial practices can reveal about the extent of social networks.
    • At bigthink, David Berreby discusses a neat study on the ways colors can influence our perception ? and how sports teams may integrate this information when planning team uniforms (and how it might work against them). It?s a fun read that takes research out of the lab and away from the WEIRD crowd.

Until next time, folks. I?ll be back next week with more from anthropology, philosophy, and research.

Regulators probe bank's role in Facebook IPO

(AP) ? Regulators are examining whether Morgan Stanley, the investment bank that shepherded Facebook through its highly publicized stock offering last week, selectively informed clients of an analyst's negative report about the company before the stock started trading.

Rick Ketchum, the head of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the self-policing body for the securities industry, said Tuesday that the question is "a matter of regulatory concern" for his organization and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The top securities regulator for Massachusetts, William Galvin, said he had subpoenaed Morgan Stanley. Galvin said his office is investigating whether Morgan Stanley divulged to only some clients that one of its analysts had cut his revenue estimates for Facebook before the stock hit the market on Friday.

The bank said late Tuesday that it "followed the same procedures for the Facebook offering that it follows for all IPOs," referring to initial public offerings of stock. It said that its procedures complied with regulations.

The questions about the role played by Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter for the deal, add to the confusion surrounding Facebook's IPO. In the most hotly anticipated stock debut in years, the offering raised $16 billion for the social networking company, valuing it at $104 billion

On Tuesday, Robert Greifeld, the CEO of the Nasdaq Stock Market, acknowledged to shareholders of Nasdaq's parent company that "clearly we had mistakes within the Facebook listing."

The stock debut, originally set for 11 a.m. EDT Friday, was delayed more than half an hour because of technical problems at Nasdaq. Some brokerages were still sorting out the aftermath on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, our clients continue to feel the effects of this in some cases," said Stephen Austin, a spokesman for Fidelity Investments, one of the country's largest brokerages. Fidelity was still waiting for some Facebook stock orders that it placed on Friday to be executed. Fidelity's systems had performed normally, Austin said.

In the meantime, Facebook stock itself has been a disappointment. It fell $3.03 on Tuesday to close at $31 and has now fallen $7, or more than 18 percent, from its offering price of $38. It managed to add just 23 cents in its first hours of trading on Friday, then suffered a big decline on Monday.

The Reuters news service reported Tuesday that a Morgan Stanley analyst, Scott Devitt, cut his estimate for Facebook's revenue this year to $4.85 billion from more than $5 billion earlier. Reuters reported that it was unclear whether Morgan Stanley had told only select clients about the reduced estimate.

Reuters reported that the analyst cut his figures for Facebook while the company's executives, including founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, were shopping the stock to potential investors in the weeks ahead of the IPO, a process known in investing as a road show.

Morgan Stanley, in its statement, did not specifically address which clients might have been told about a reduced estimate from one of its analysts. It said that "a significant number" of analysts, including those from other firms underwriting the stock issue, had reduced their estimates for Facebook to reflect publicly available information about the company.

That was a reference to a May 9 regulatory filing in which Facebook said a shift by many Facebook users toward mobile devices might limit its revenue growth. Social media companies have struggled to make as much money as they would like from mobile advertising. Advertising accounts for more than 80 percent of Facebook's overall revenue.

Morgan Stanley also said that revised analyst views were taken into account in setting the stock offering price at $38 per share. Facebook, working with Morgan Stanley, first set a range of $28 to $35 for the offering price, then raised the range to $34 to $38 before setting it at $38 on the night before the IPO.

When the stock started trading Friday, it jumped several dollars, but quickly fell back toward $38. It never crossed below that level on its first day, and outside analysts said that was probably because Morgan Stanley, eager to avoid the embarrassment of a first-day decline in the stock price, had rushed in with thousands of buy orders at $38.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night that Facebook's chief financial officer, David Ebersman, decided shortly before the stock debut to raise the number of shares the company would offer by 25 percent. The Journal, citing people familiar with the planning of the stock offering, also reported that Morgan Stanley had assured Ebersman there was plenty of demand for the stock.

A spokesman for Facebook Inc., which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., said late Tuesday that the company had no comment.

The SEC had already said on Friday that it was looking into problems surrounding the IPO. On Tuesday, the agency's chairman, Mary Schapiro, said: "I think there is a lot of reason to have confidence in our markets and in the integrity of how they operate, but there are issues that we need to look at specifically with respect to Facebook."

Squid ink from Jurassic period identical to modern squid ink

    Tuesday, May 22, 2012

An international team of researchers, including a University of Virginia professor, has found that two ink sacs from 160-million-year-old giant cephalopod fossils discovered two years ago in England contain the pigment melanin, and that it is essentially identical to the melanin found in the ink sac of a modern-day cuttlefish.

The study is published online in the May 21 edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The finding ? in an extremely rare case of being able to study organic material that is hundreds of millions of years old ? suggests that the ink-screen escape mechanism of cephalopods ? cuttlefish, squid and octopuses ? has not evolved since the Jurassic period, and that melanin could be preserved intact in the fossils of a range of organisms.

"Though the other organic components of the cephalopod we studied are long gone, we've discovered through a variety of research methods that the melanin has remained in a condition that could be studied in exquisite detail," said John Simon, one of the study authors, a chemistry professor and the executive vice president and provost at U.Va.

One of the ink sacs studied is the only intact ink sac ever discovered.

Phillip Wilby of the British Geological Survey found it in Christian Malford, Wiltshire, England, west of London near Bristol. He sent samples to Simon and Japanese chemist Shoskue Ito, both experts on melanin, who then engaged research colleagues in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and India to investigate the samples using a combination of direct, high-resolution chemical techniques to determine whether or not the melanin had been preserved.

    It had.

The investigators then compared the chemical composition of the fossil melanin to the melanin in the ink of the modern cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, common to the Mediterranean, North and Baltic seas.

    They found a match.

"It's close enough that I would argue that the pigmentation in this class of animals has not evolved in 160 million years," Simon said. "The whole machinery apparently has been locked in time and passed down through succeeding generations of cuttlefish. It's a very optimized system for this animal and has been optimized for a long time."

Generally animal tissue, made up mostly of protein, degrades quickly. Over the course of millions of years all that is likely to be found from an animal is skeletal remains or an impression of the shape of the animal in surrounding rock. Scientists can learn much about an animal by its bones and impressions, but without organic matter they are left with many unanswered questions.

But melanin is an exception. Though organic, it is highly resilient to degradation over the course of vast amounts of time.

"Out of all of the organic pigments in living systems, melanin has the highest odds of being found in the fossil record," Simon said. "That attribute also makes it a challenge to study. We had to use innovative methods from chemistry, biology and physics to isolate the melanin from the inorganic material."

The researchers cross-checked their work using separate complementary experiments designed to capitalize on various molecular features unique to melanin and determined the morphology and chemical composition of the material. This combination of in-depth, multidisciplinary techniques is not normally used by paleontologists to study fossil samples.

"I think the strength of this paper is that it is not tied to a single method," Simon said. "Any one technique would have brought some insights, but potentially more questions than insights. It was really the more holistic approach that fully characterized it and allowed us to actually do a real comparison between what existed during the Jurassic period and what exists now.

"It's also given us a handle on ways of identifying organic components in fossils that might have been missed using standard methods."

(AP) ? It was all sunshine, smiles and celebratory speeches as officials marked the arrival of an undersea fiber-optic cable they promised would end Cuba's Internet isolation and boost web capacity 3,000-fold. Even a retired Fidel Castro had hailed the dawn of a new cyber-age on the island.

More than a year after the February 2011 ceremony on Siboney Beach in eastern Cuba, and 10 months after the system was supposed to have gone online, the government never mentions the cable anymore, and Internet here remains the slowest in the hemisphere. People talk quietly about embezzlement torpedoing the project and the arrest of more than a half-dozen senior telecom officials.

Perhaps most maddening, nobody has explained what happened to the much-ballyhooed $70 million project.

"They did some photo-op ... and then that scandal came out, and then it just disappeared from human consciousness," said Larry Press, a professor of information systems at California State University, Dominguez Hills, who studies Cuba, referring to foreign media reports and whispers by diplomats that several executives at state phone company Etecsa and the two senior officials in the Telecommunications Ministry were arrested last year.

The cable was strung from Venezuela with the help of key ally Hugo Chavez. Government officials said from the start that the bandwidth boon would be prioritized for hospitals, universities and other usage deemed in service of the common good; the legions of Cubans with little or no access to the Internet from their homes would have to wait.

But a dozen employees of public institutions interviewed by The Associated Press said they have seen no noticeable improvement in their work connections. If anything, they say, download speeds have even gotten a little slower.

Going online in Cuba will try the patience of anyone who's ever had a taste of high-speed DSL connections.

The problem is that connection speeds here are still Web 1.0, while the world has moved on to fancier, bandwidth-hogging platforms like Flash. YouTube is irrelevant on Cuban dial-up, and barely useable on the rare broadband connections. Want to watch the latest episode of "Mad Men?" At 3-5 kilobytes-per-second dial-up transfer speeds, a 500-megabyte video file would theoretically take somewhere between 28 and 46 hours to download from iTunes.

Artists and photographers say it's nearly impossible to view others' work online. People swap digital pictures in person on memory sticks rather than simply sending them as email attachments. Students have difficulty accessing research databases.

One doctor in Havana said she only has access to Cuba's domestic intranet, a bare-bones internal network of island-hosted sites that also lets users get email. Moreover, her institution recently began cracking down on the few who do have full Internet access, ordering them not to use sites like Facebook under threat of punishment.

"I had high hopes, great expectations for the cable. ... For me, doing a postgraduate degree, (the intranet) is no good. It's too basic and poor for our needs," she said. "They haven't given us any explanation."

She and the others spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of getting into trouble with their state employers.

Multiple attempts to get Cuban and Venezuelan government officials to comment were unsuccessful.

The Venezuela branch of Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent, which was contracted to lay the cable, referred questions to the Cuban-Venezuelan joint venture Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe, where an official said he would need approval from Venezuela's science and technology ministry to talk about the project. The ministry did not respond to requests to interview officials.

Diplomats in Havana privately tell consistent stories of reported corner-cutting on the project that let corrupt officials skim millions of dollars from its budget.

A senior French official told AP that Alcatel had upheld its part of the contract and whatever problems exist must be on land with the network it was meant to be attached to.

"The cable must be connected to something or it won't work," said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the politically sensitive project.

The lack of transparency is not unusual for Cuba, where all media is state-run and tightly controlled. But it flies in the face of Fidel Castro's own enthusiastic words about the cable and the transformational power of the Internet.

"Secrets are over. ... We are facing the most powerful weapon that has ever existed, which is communication," Castro told Mexican daily La Jornada in an August 2010 interview in which he hailed the coming cable.

While some hold out hope that faster Internet has merely been delayed, others interpret the government's long silence as a sign Cuba's broadband dreams will be the latest grand pronouncement to end in disappointment.

"I have no expectations for the cable," said Marlene Blanco, a 25-year-old independent worker. "Nothing is going to change for ordinary Cubans. So why talk about it?"

According to government statistics, 16 percent of islanders were online in some capacity in 2011, mostly through work or school, and often just to the intranet. The National Statistics Office said last year that just 2.9 percent reported having direct Internet access, though outside experts estimate the real figure is likely 5 to 10 percent accounting for black market sales of dial-up minutes. For a variety of reasons including the 50-year-old U.S. economic embargo, Cuba is the last country in the Western Hemisphere to get a fiber-optic connection to the outside world, and has relied instead on costly and slow satellite linkups.

Some speculate that the Internet-fueled Arab Spring revolts, which began months before the cable's arrival in Cuba, could have altered the government's plan or at least made officials rethink the wisdom of making it widely available.

"They're afraid of it. They don't want a 'Cuban Spring,' so to speak," Press said.

President Raul Castro's administration has warned of a supposed plot by enemies in the United States to wage a "cyberwar" to destabilize the Communist-run government. In 2011, a Cuban court sentenced U.S. subcontractor Alan Gross to 15 years after convicting him of crimes against the state for importing restricted communications equipment that he insists was only meant to help the island's Jewish community gain better Internet access.

The official silence over the fiber-optic cable has given rise to other rumors: that the cable is operational but being used selectively. A pro-government blogger known as Yohandry Fontana wrote at the end of 2011 that people who attended a closed forum on social networks reported it was working fine.

"Here's a brief summary: 1. The cable has no problem, it is working. 2. Public Internet spaces will open on the island. 3. Costs for public connection will go down. Note: I am seeking more information," Fontana said.

Cuban-born economist Arturo Lopez-Levy said Havana has badly bungled the whole affair, and if it's true that corruption killed the cable, officials should "make heads roll over the scandal" and give an open accounting of what went wrong.

"The Cuban government failure to achieve this goal is one of the worst-managed situations," said Lopez-Levy, a lecturer at the University of Denver, "aggravated by an even worse public relations fiasco to address it."
