New way to lose weight? Changing microbes in guts of mice resulted in rapid weight loss

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Scientists at Harvard may have new hope for anyone who's tried to fight the battle of the bulge.

New research, conducted in collaboration with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, has found that the gut microbes of mice undergo drastic changes following gastric bypass surgery. Transfer of these microbes into sterile mice resulted in rapid weight loss. The study is described in a March 27 paper in Science Translational Medicine.

"Simply by colonizing mice with the altered microbial community, the mice were able to maintain a lower body fat, and lose weight -- about 20% as much as they would if they underwent surgery," said Peter Turnbaugh, a Bauer Fellow at Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Center for Systems Biology, and one of two senior authors of the paper.

But as striking as those results were, they weren't as dramatic as they might have been.

"In some ways we were biasing the results against weight loss," Turnbaugh said, explaining that the mice used in the study hadn't been given a high-fat, high-sugar diet to increase their weight beforehand. "The question is whether we might have seen a stronger effect if they were on a different diet."

"Our study suggests that the specific effects of gastric bypass on the microbiota contribute to its ability to cause weight loss and that finding ways to manipulate microbial populations to mimic those effects could become a valuable new tool to address obesity," said Lee Kaplan, director of the Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition Institute at MGH and the other senior author of the paper.

"We need to learn a good deal more about the mechanisms by which a microbial population changed by gastric bypass exert its effects, and then we need to learn if we can produce these effects -- either the microbial changes or the associated metabolic changes -- without surgery," Kaplan, an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, added. "The ability to achieve even some of these effects without surgery would give us an entirely new way to treat the critical problem of obesity, one that could help patients unable or unwilling to have surgery."

While the results were exciting, Turnbaugh warned that it may be years before they could be replicated in humans, and that such microbial changes shouldn't be viewed as a way to lose those stubborn last 10 pounds without going to the gym. Rather, the technique may one day offer hope to dangerously obese people who want to lose weight without going through the trauma of surgery.

"It may not be that we will have a magic pill that will work for everyone who's slightly overweight," he said. "But if we can, at a minimum, provide some alternative to gastric bypass surgery that produces similar effects, it would be a major advance."

While there had been hints that the microbes in the gut might change after bypass surgery, the speed and extent of the change came as a surprise to the research team.

In earlier experiments, researchers had shown that the guts of both lean and obese mice are populated by varying amounts of two types of bacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. When mice undergo gastric bypass surgery, however, it "resets the whole picture," Turnbaugh said.

"The post-bypass community was dominated by Proteobacteria and Proteobacteria, and had relatively low levels of Firmicutes," he said. What's more, Turnbaugh said, those changes occurred within a week of the surgery, and weren't short-lived -- the altered gut microbial community remained stable for months afterward.

While the results may hold out the hope for weight loss without surgery, both Turnbaugh and Kaplan warned that future studies are needed to understand exactly what is behind the weight loss seen in mice.

"A major gap in our knowledge is the underlying mechanism linking microbes to weight loss," Turnbaugh said. "There were certain microbes that we found at higher abundance after surgery, so we think those are good targets for beginning to understand what's taking place."

In fact, Turnbaugh said, the answer may not be the specific types of microbes, but a by-product they excrete.

In addition to changes in the microbes found in the gut, researchers found changes in the concentration of certain short-chain fatty acids. Other studies, Turnbaugh said, have suggested that those molecules may be critical in signaling to the host to speed up metabolism, or not to store excess calories as fat.

Going forward, Turnbaugh and Kaplan hope to continue to explore those questions.

"We think such studies will allow us to understand how host/microbial interactions in general can influence the outcome of a given diet," Kaplan said. "To some degree, what we're learning is a comfort for people who have an issue with their weight, because more and more we're learning that the story is more complicated than just how much you exercise and how much you eat."

Colorado Veteran Finds Better Sleep With Donation of Easy Rest Adjustable Bed

Prior to receiving his Easy Rest Adjustable Bed, Army Corporal Nicholas Orchowski suffered from insomnia, muscle spasms and had a hard time finding comfort at night. Now, he?s not waking up as frequently and he?s getting a longer, deeper sleep that allows him to feel more rested in the morning.

Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) March 27, 2013

Army Corporal Nicholas Orchowski was only averaging four hours of sleep a night and had trouble finding comfort in bed after suffering a debilitating injury in Baghdad, Iraq nine years ago. Now, thanks to the donation of an Easy Rest Adjustable Bed, he?s enjoying a deeper, more solid sleep and he?s waking up feeling better rested, and with improved leg circulation, thanks to his new bed.

?My wife and I are both getting better sleep,? said Cpl. Orchowski. ?With this bed it?s easier to get and stay comfortable and I?m not waking up as much to change positions during the night. Since receiving my Easy Rest Adjustable Bed I?m averaging a solid seven hours of sleep a night.?

Cpl. Orchowski served as a Military Police Officer in Baghdad in 2004. That May he was part of a mission to pick up firearms and ammunition for a new unit that was coming into Iraq. Cpl. Orchowski was assigned to be the gunner of the lead Humvee providing security for the convoy. During the drive between bases, his Humvee was hit head-on by a dump truck filled with bricks, loose rocks and explosives. The Humvee was blown into pieces and he was thrown from the vehicle. He broke several vertebrae in his back, shattered his right elbow, tore the patellar tendon in his right leg and suffered a traumatic brain injury. His injuries left him paralyzed from the neck down.

After being stabilized in the field, Cpl. Orchowski was flown to Landstuhl, Germany for the first of many surgeries and was quickly transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He spent three months there before moving to the VA Spinal Cord Injury Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After countless surgeries, and a great deal of therapy, he has regained some function in his legs and left arm and is considered an incomplete quadriplegic. Today he is walking with the use of braces and uses a wheelchair occasionally. He has not regained the use of his right arm but he is still fighting to strengthen his body.

?We are thrilled to be able to help Cpl. Orchowski achieve a better night?s sleep with an Easy Rest Adjustable Bed,? said Jeff Mowrey, Chief Operating Officer for the Company. ?He has given so much in service to our Country and it?s an honor to be able to thank him in this way. That's why we created the Beds For Our Troops Program.?

When asked what he thought was the beds best features Cpl. Orchowski didn?t hesitate with his answer. ?The ability to adjust the head and foot of the bed and the massage features are the best benefits for me,? he stated. ?No more using 20 pillows to find a comfortable position. And the massage is awesome and relaxing. My kids love that feature the most. We get into bed as a family and turn the massage motors on and it knocks the kids right out,? he added happily.

Cpl. Orchowski lives in Parker, Colorado with his wife and two daughters. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys participating in adaptive skiing, hunting and fishing programs.

GAME prices OUYA at 99, opens up preorders

American gamers already know where they'll be able to pick up an OUYA. Our friends across the Atlantic, however, only knew that they'd be able order it online direct from the company. Well, brick-and-mortar stalwart GAME appears to be in line to stock the console in the UK (or at least it thinks it is) and has opened up pre-orders for the Android-based machine. What's more, it's been slapped with a £99 price tag -- a predictable, but unfortunately higher price than Americans will be paying. The release date is still listed as TBD, though retail availability is scheduled for sometime in June. If you'd like to help keep GAME afloat you can reserve your OUYA at the source.

Bond Producers Still Wooing Sam Mendes

Posted 8:10 PM March 25th, 2013 by Binh Ngo

Skyfall is the highest grossing James Bond movie ever with over $1 billion in global ticket sales, so, obviously, the producers want to bottle whatever happened in that movie and hope for lightning to strike again. This includes having Sam Mendes back to shepherd the project.

But due to his other obligations, like his theatrical productions, he won't be able to take on Bond 24, even if he wanted to. The question is, does he want another go at the Bond franchise?

Mendes was on record saying that he didn't want repeat himself so this time away is actually a good thing for him and the franchise.

He can take all the time in the world because the Bond producers are willing to wait, and they are confident they can get him to return.

"We will get him back," producer Barbara Broccoli said. "We haven't given up hope... Maybe not for the next one... but we will get him back again."

According to MGM chairman Gary Barber, the next Bond movie will arrive in theaters "within the next three years."

As for who will direct the next one, Guy Ritchie is favored, according to bookmakers William Hill. Is Ritchie a good choice to replace Mendes? Share your thoughts below.

Cyprus bailout relief turns sour on banks concern

LONDON (AP) ? A relief rally in stock markets in the wake of the Cypriot bailout deal proved short-lived Monday after a top European official warned that a similarly tough strategy should be used across the region.

In the immediate aftermath of the deal between the Mediterranean island nation and international creditors, stocks had rallied and the euro edged back up above the $1.30 mark. But as the day wore on, the optimism ran dry.

Markets began to fall sharply after Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutchman who chairs the meetings of eurozone finance ministers, said Cyprus' bailout should become a template for dealing with troubled banks across Europe.

The eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund granted Cyprus a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout that foresees dissolving the country's second-largest bank, wiping out its bondholders and inflicting significant losses ? possibly up to 40 percent ? on all deposits larger than 100,000 euros.

Dijsselbloem said that banks' bondholders and depositors should be prepared to take losses if the banks they put their money in run into trouble.

"The Cypriot bailout has a powerful legacy which may alter the security with which depositors elsewhere in the eurozone view the safety of banks," said Jane Foley, an analyst at Rabobank International.

In Europe, markets lost all gains to close lower. Britain's FTSE 100 ended 0.2 percent lower at 6,378.38 while Germany's DAX fell 0.5 percent to 7,870.90. The CAC-40 in France shed 1.1 percent to 3,727.98.

Markets in financially weaker states, such as Italy and Spain, took the biggest hit, as their bank shares fell on fears that depositors and investors could be scared away.

Italy's FTSE-MIB closed 2.5 percent while Spain shed 2.3 percent. The euro, meanwhile, slid sharply from about $1.30 to below $1.29.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average lost earlier gains, trading 0.3 percent lower at 14,471 while the broader S&P 500 index lost 0.2 percent to 1,554.11.

The focus will likely remain on developments surrounding Cyprus for a while yet. In particular, investors will be interested to see if the level of bank withdrawals from the country's banks when they reopen. That's scheduled for Tuesday.

A longer-lasting concern is how the Cyprus deal plays out in other countries, notably those at the forefront of Europe's debt crisis. Will depositors look to reduce their holdings in Spain, Italy and Greece?

"It will set an unsettling precedent for future bailouts and investors will once again be concerned over the security of their bank deposits," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.

In return for a 10 billion euros ($13 billion) bailout from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund, Cyprus agreed to drastically shrink its outsized banking sector, cut its budget, implement economic reforms and privatize state assets ? a cocktail of measures that mean the country's near-term economic prospects are bleak indeed.

The deal will allow the European Central Bank to continue providing liquidity to the remnants of Cyprus' banking system, thereby eliminating any short-term fears of bankruptcy.

Cyprus's side of the bargain is earmarked to raise 5.8 billion euros. To do so, the country's second-largest bank, Laiki, will be restructured and bond holders and savers with more than 100,000 euros deposited will have to take significant losses. Depositors in the biggest bank, the Bank of Cyprus, with over 100,000 euros will also bear a cost but those with savings up to 100,000 euros will be guaranteed in accordance with the EU's deposit insurance guarantee.

Earlier, investors in Asia had the first chance to respond to the Cypriot developments and there too the response in financial markets was of relief. Japan's Nikkei 225 index surged 1.7 percent to 12,546.46 while South Korea's Kospi jumped 1.5 percent to 1,977.67. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.6 percent to 22,251.15.

However, mainland Chinese shares fell Monday, with the Shanghai Composite Index down 0.1 percent at 2326.72, while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index fell the same rate to 959.93.

Oil prices were solid despite the retreat in stock markets, with the benchmark New York contract up 88 cents a barrel at $94.59 per barrel.

Unique Home Construction: Nine Smart Ways to Finance Your ...

The most common way people finance a home improvement project is through a mortgage loan, either a home equity loan, or a regular mortgage. There is much to learn about financing your remodel through a mortgage broker or bank, so even if you choose to go the most common route, be sure and do your research, read fine print, and compare rates.?

The reason that a refinance of your existing mortgage is the most common method is that it is generally the least expensive.? In the current market that is certainly the case.? It is possible in many cases to refinance your existing mortgage at a lower rate than the current one, take out $25,000 - $50,000 for the remodel, and actually see your monthly payments reduced.? See more on that in a post we wrote:

How to Finance your Remodel with the Same Monthly Payments with Dallas Home Value Increase

Using a Home Equity Line of Credit for Remodeling?

One of the most common ways people finance a home remodel is through a home equity line of credit (HELOC). If you have enough equity, a HELOC allows you to borrow on your home's value, using the home as collateral. You can borrow up to the credit limit, and interest rates are often low. If you go with this option, be sure and shop around for a competitive rate.

This HELOC method is popular, because it can be the fastest and easiest.? Plus you have the flexibility of a revolving line of credit, but at very low interest rates.? You can pay it off faster or borrow more later with the same methods as you would a credit card. ?

Using Tax Incentives to Offset the Cost of Your Home Improvements or Remodel

?
Making your home more energy-efficient is a great improvement that will save you money over time, as well as increasing your home's value. The government offers tax incentives that can offset this expense. Accessing these incentives may help you finance your home build or remodel. Federal tax incentives may be available to offset the cost of upgrading your appliances to Energy Star, or installing solar panels or solar energy systems. There are also green building programs through?the state of Texas, and the city of Dallas.?

Today we are talking about financing through Federal Title I loans.

Currently many families are concerned about the cost of home improvements, and may be putting them off, even if they are badly needed. Title I loans may be an option for homeowners who may not qualify for other types of financing because they do not have equity in their home.?Loans are available for up to $25,000 in home improvements, and up to 20 year loans. Interest rates are generally much lower than what private lenders.

The Federal Title I program provides insurance to private lenders. Approved lenders then provide Title I-backed loans to consumers.?Applications for Title I loans are available through many financial institutions in the Dallas area.

Other Time-Honored Methods of Financing Your Home Remodel

There are plenty of other ways to do the job.? Some make way more sense than others, but you are the only one to make that judgement call:
  • Borrow from Mom or Dad or Rich Uncle or Other Relation or Friend
  • Credit Cards can be a fast approach if you plan a quick pay off
  • Personal loans through banks, credit unions, or finance companies
  • Borrow against other assets such as second homes, investments, autos
  • Borrow against your Insurance Policy
  • Combine different Methods

Selectively manipulating protein modifications

Selectively manipulating protein modifications [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 10-Mar-2013

This press release is available in German.

Protein activity is strictly regulated. Incorrect or poor protein regulation can lead to uncontrolled growth and thus cancer or chronic inflammation. Members of the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich have identified enzymes that can regulate the activity of medically important proteins. Their discovery enables these proteins to be manipulated very selectively, opening up new treatment methods for inflammations and cancer.

For a healthy organism, it is crucial for proteins to be active or inactive at the right time. The corresponding regulation is often based on a chemical modification of the protein structure: Enzymes attach small molecules to particular sites on a protein or remove them, thereby activating or deactivating the protein. Members of the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich in collaboration with other Institutes have now discovered how the inactivation of a protein, which is important for medicine, can be reversed.

New group of ADP-ribosylhydrolases identified

An important protein modification is ADP-ribosylation, which is involved in certain types of breast cancer, cellular stress reactions and gene regulation. So-called ADP-ribosyltransferases attach the ADP ribose molecule to proteins, thereby altering their function. In recent years, many ADP-ribosyltransferases have been discovered that can convey single or several ADP-riboses to different proteins. Enzymes that can remove these riboses again, however, are less well known. Professor Michael Hottiger's team of researchers has now identified a new group of such ADP-ribosylhydrolases. The scientists discovered that a so-called macrodomain is responsible for removing the ADP-riboses in human proteins, but also in the bacterium Archaeoglobus fulgidus.

"We therefore assume that the reversal of the modification takes place in a similar way in different species," explains Michael Hottiger.

Biomedically relevant: inactivation of the modified enzyme GSK3?

The researchers also prove that ADP-ribosylhydrolases can remove the ADP-ribose of the intensively studied enzyme GSK3?, which regulates the synthesis of storage substances and is important in the progression of various diseases. ADP-ribosylation deactivates GSK3?, which can be reversed again by the newly identified enzyme. "Our discovery enables ADP-ribose modification to be manipulated and tested selectively, and new treatment methods developed for diseases such as inflammations or cancer," concludes Michael Hottiger.

Rocket launcher returned at California gun buyback

By NBCBayArea.com

Solano County's first countywide gun buyback program today collected 344 weapons including a military rocket launcher and multiple assault rifles, according to Vallejo police Chief Joseph Kreins.

The buyback, conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drew in 113? handguns, 67 shotguns, 163 rifles, including multiple assault rifles and the? rocket launcher, Kreins said.

"The goal of the operation was simple: We wanted to get as many? illegal and unwanted guns off the streets of Solano County as possible,"? Kreins said in a statement today.

"We all know that these very firearms are often used to commit? violent crimes against our fellow citizens and in a variety of tragic? scenarios, including suicides," Kreins added.

A similar gun buyback in Santa Clara County last weekend had a starting budget of $150,000.??? In the end, the Santa Clara County sheriff's department said they received 1,116 guns, which included 47 assault weapons. They gave out about $114,0000, which means they had money left over.

Milky Way's black hole to gobble up 'snack'

European Research Media Center

This still photo from a computer animation shows a simulation of a giant space cloud falling into Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our own Milky Way galaxy, in mid-2013.

By Clara Moskowitz

The giant black hole at the center of the Milky Way is preparing to gobble up a tasty gas cloud in a cosmic meal astronomers are eager to witness.

Most galaxies are thought to host humongous black holes at their cores, and the Milky Way's, which is called Sagittarius A* (pronounced "Sagittarius A-star") contains about 4 million times the mass of our sun.

It's about to add a tiny bit more mass to its girth, when it swallows a cloud on a collision course with it. Scientists think it will take the black hole about a year to completely devour the cloud, with the peak of its feast occurring around September of this year.

"This is the first chance we've had to witness such an event in nearly 40 years of monitoring the galactic center, so this is a rare privilege," said P. Chris? Fragile, an astrophysicist at the College of Charleston who works on computer simulations of the cloud's fall. The phenomenon, he said, "will be one of the most carefully observed astronomical events ever."

In contrast to the enormous size of the black hole, the cloud is just about three times the mass of Earth ? "just a tiny little snack," said Stefan Gillessen, an astronomer at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany. [Milky Way Black Hole Eats Gas Cloud (Video)]

Gillessen and his colleague Reinhard Genzel have been observing the cloud and plan to ramp up their observations soon to catch its descent toward the black hole. Observing the event will require some of the most sensitive observatories on Earth, such as the Very Large Telescope in Chile, where Gillessen and Genzel will be making their observations.

"It's at the limit of what telescopes can do," Gillessen told Space.com. "It's very faint, and we have to look for quite some time to see it."

Already, scientists have seen the cloud speed up and stretch out as it gets pulled closer and closer to its doom. Gravitational tidal forces from the black hole have caused it to morph from a roughly circular shape, in 2004, into a thin, oblong object in 2012. And while eight years ago the cloud was moving about 620 miles per second (1,000 kilometers per second), it is now zooming at a brisk 1,500 miles a second (2,500 km/s).

The upcoming cosmic spectacle should offer scientists a chance to test some of their theories about how black holes pull in, or accrete, mass.

"It might be a very unique opportunity to see how it is accreting," Gillessen said. "The most exciting thing would be if Sagittarius A* changes its accretion state. If the accretion rate increases, you might expect that Sagittarius A* itself will turn significantly brighter, and it might also change its structure. There's a slight chance that radio telescopes can actually catch that."

Scientists also hope to learn more about the cloud and where it came from. For example, some theories suggest there could be a hidden star buried beneath the gas that is currently invisible, but which is feeding the cloud with gas from within.

"We can obviously learn more about the nature of the cloud itself, we can learn about the conditions of the background gas, and ultimately we can learn more about how the black hole at the center of our galaxy is really fed," Fragile said.

(AP) ? Justin Bieber's week just got worse.

Following a brief hospital stay after fainting backstage, the 19-year-old pop star's preparation for a final concert in London on Friday hit a speed bump.

Bieber got into an altercation with insult-hurling paparazzi, lashing out at a photographer with a stream of expletives as he was restrained by minders.

The singer quickly took to Twitter to address the incident, which was captured by Channel 5 news, and pledged to channel his "adrenaline" into his Friday show.

"Ahhhhh! Rough morning. Trying to feel better for this show tonight but let the paps get the best of me," he posted on the social networking site.

"Sometimes when people r shoving cameras in your face all day and yelling the worst thing possible at u...well I'm human. Rough week."

The scuffle came just hours after Bieber said he was "getting better" after struggling to breathe during the previous night's concert at the O2 arena, and pledged the show would go on as planned.

A spokesman for the O2 Arena said the 19-year-old pop star was treated backstage during Thursday's concert after becoming short of breath, but recovered and finished his set.

"As far as we are concerned everything is on, on, on" for Friday's show, Jeremy King said.

"He was treated by our team of medics and after further examination they didn't find anything more serious or worrying."

A spokeswoman for Bieber said he was recovering after Thursday's incident, which saw him given oxygen before returning to the stage.

"Justin has been released from the hospital after a check-up and, while he's feeling a little under the weather, he's currently planning on going ahead with tonight's show," the spokeswoman said Friday. She demanded anonymity to discuss the star's condition.

Bieber later posted a shirtless photo of himself in a hospital bed, saying he was getting better and listening to Janis Joplin. Before that on Twitter he thanked "everyone pulling me thru tonight."

"Best fans in the world," he wrote. "Figuring out what happened. Thanks for the love."

Video footage from the concert shows Bieber appearing to fade during a performance of his up-tempo hit, "Beauty and a Beat." He slows down, puts a hand to his head then bends over, resting his hands on knees before walking slowly to the back of the stage.

The AP spoke to 18-year-old journalism student Prithvi Pandya, who shot the footage, to confirm its authenticity.

"When he started 'Beauty and a Beat' you could see he was struggling," said Pandya, who was near the front of the crowd. "He took lots of drinks of water, that seemed unusual, and he was really sweaty, sweating a helluva lot.

"Toward the end of it, he went backstage. We didn't see him fainting. They brought on dancers to entertain, and I knew something was wrong at that point."

Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, appeared onstage and told the crowd that the singer was feeling "very low of breath" but would come back to finish the show.

Jazz Chappell, a 20-year-old concertgoer who brought her younger sister and her friend to the show, said that In the nearly 30 minutes he was offstage, some fans started to leave. Once his manager announced what had happened, Chappell said many fans in the audience were gasping and crying, while others kept cheering for him to return.

"I thought, 'Give the guy a break. He just fainted. He's not a performing horse. Let him rest a second,'" said Chappell.

Chappell said Bieber, who is in London to perform four concerts at the O2, later returned and performed low-energy renditions of his hits "Boyfriend" and "Baby."

Braun later tweeted "everyone please give him a little space and he will be ok. Im sure he appreciates the support ... Tough kid proud night once again he always finishes the show. Full out. True pro..."

The incident caps a difficult week for Bieber. He was forced to apologize to outraged fans who accused him of taking the stage almost two hours late for his first concert at the O2 on Monday. He insisted he was only 40 minutes late and blamed "technical issues." He took to Twitter to vent his frustrations with the media's portrayal of the incident.

The star's Believe world tour is due to move on to Portugal on Monday, then continue across Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and North America until August.

MidiWing opens up music creation to everybody

Inspired by the many people he encountered at his mother's daycare center for severely disabled children when he was a youngster himself, multi-instrumentalist Dan Daily began working on a digital music system that anyone can play, regardless of ability or physical capability. Several prototypes later, along with some vital technical input from Lockhead Martin subsidiary Sandia National Laboratories, and MidiWing 1 is ready for release.

Learning to play traditional instruments like the guitar, piano or trumpet is tough. Throw in a physical disability to the already steep learning curve, and playing music becomes an activity reserved for the privileged few. Daily says that his MidiWing electronic instrument "reduces or eliminates the technical difficulties related to playing a musical instrument," while also opening up music creation to disabled players.

Six years after moving to Taos, New Mexico in 2000, Daily started working on a microcontroller-based system that sent hex commands based on the widely-used MIDI standard to a sound module or computer via USB, which subsequently converted the signal into synthesized sound output. After the first prototypes appeared in 2004, the project hit a development stumbling block when manufacture of the device's chip brain was halted and Daily didn't have the resources to seek out another for his next prototype.

A helping hand came in the shape of the New Mexico Small Business Assistance Program, which offers free technical assistance to small businesses. Daily was paired with Sandia microsystems/electrical engineer Kent Pfeifer, who luckily also had an interest in music.

"The idea was to build an instrument that has a whole bunch of different types of interfaces with the ability to run off a mouse, joystick or other kind of device that can be configured to the abilities of somebody with a disability," Pfeifer said. "You can play it with your mouth, your feet or a single hand."

Pfeifer took the basic MidiWing concept and developed a new chip that gave the instrument more inputs, more configuration options and more ways to control it ? while also reducing the overall bulk.

You can see cerebral palsy sufferer Albert Rivera getting to grips with a forerunner of the current system in the video below.

The stand-alone MidiWing 1 includes a special interface with various inputs for hooking up switches, sensors and gizmos (joystick, mouse, slider/fader, pressure pad, for example) appropriate to the player's physical abilities, plus an amp/speaker combo and an onboard synthesizer. There's also a small box with three buttons to the top that works alongside whatever continuous controller the player has chosen to use, to grant users access to a digital vault packed with numerous sounds, timbres and tunings.

Where a traditional guitar requires the player to press down a finger at a certain position along the neck to produce a particular note, or the combination of skilled mouth and valve manipulation to create smooth wind instrument sounds, digital instruments don't need to follow a strict set of layout or note assignment rules.

"With traditional instruments, note selection is intricately connected to the way the instrument is devised," said Daily. "With electronics you can divorce those."

As such, MidiWing benefits from all that a traditional instrument has to offer, but with ergonomics which are purposefully simplified and controls that can be specifically adapted to the player. It also doesn't require the kind of intensive physical exertion associated with some traditional instruments, such as drums.

Pitch range can be widened or narrowed, depending on how challenging the player wants the experience to be, and the system is capable of simulating frequencies that are normally produced by musician technique ? such as varying pressure of a player's lips on a brass instrument. Since the instrument is actually loosely based on a trumpet, music teachers can make use of existing pedagogy, and simple visual feedback is incorporated to help students better visualize the notes being played.

Daily has created a company called Musicode Innovations to bring his system ? which includes proprietary software that caters for parameter adjustment and sensor/interface tweaks ? to market, and sees MidiWing being particularly useful for schools, hospitals, therapy and rehab centers. Pricing for the MidiWing 1 starts at US$1,000. More instruments are currently in development.

Britain stepping up non-lethal aid to Syria rebels

LONDON (AP) ? Britain says it will provide armored vehicles, body armor and search-and-rescue equipment to Syria's opposition ? but is still stopping short of arming the country's rebels.

Foreign Secretary William Hague says Britain is broadening its assistance to include "all forms of technical assistance to the Syrian National Coalition," including electricity repair and water purification equipment and testing equipment for chemical weapons.

Hague told lawmakers in the House of Commons on Wednesday that the measures are "a necessary, proportionate and lawful response to a situation of extreme humanitarian suffering."

But he said Britain is sticking to the current European Union sanctions against Syria, which include an arms embargo that prevents weapons being funneled to rebels fighting President Bashar Assad.

Scientists: Baby born with HIV cured

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A baby born with the virus that causes AIDS appears to have been cured, scientists announced Sunday, describing the case of a child from Mississippi who's now 2? and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of infection.

There's no guarantee the child will remain healthy, although sophisticated testing uncovered just traces of the virus' genetic material still lingering. If so, it would mark only the world's second reported cure.

Specialists say Sunday's announcement, at a major AIDS meeting in Atlanta, offers promising clues for efforts to eliminate HIV infection in children, especially in AIDS-plagued African countries where too many babies are born with the virus.

"You could call this about as close to a cure, if not a cure, that we've seen," Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health, who is familiar with the findings, told The Associated Press.

A doctor gave this baby faster and stronger treatment than is usual, starting a three-drug infusion within 30 hours of birth. That was before tests confirmed the infant was infected and not just at risk from a mother whose HIV wasn't diagnosed until she was in labor.

"I just felt like this baby was at higher-than-normal risk, and deserved our best shot," Dr. Hannah Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist at the University of Mississippi, said in an interview.

That fast action apparently knocked out HIV in the baby's blood before it could form hideouts in the body. Those so-called reservoirs of dormant cells usually rapidly reinfect anyone who stops medication, said Dr. Deborah Persaud of Johns Hopkins Children's Center. She led the investigation that deemed the child "functionally cured," meaning in long-term remission even if all traces of the virus haven't been completely eradicated.

Next, Persaud's team is planning a study to try to prove that, with more aggressive treatment of other high-risk babies. "Maybe we'll be able to block this reservoir seeding," Persaud said.

No one should stop anti-AIDS drugs as a result of this case, Fauci cautioned.

But "it opens up a lot of doors" to research if other children can be helped, he said. "It makes perfect sense what happened."

Better than treatment is to prevent babies from being born with HIV in the first place.

About 300,000 children were born with HIV in 2011, mostly in poor countries where only about 60 percent of infected pregnant women get treatment that can keep them from passing the virus to their babies. In the U.S., such births are very rare because HIV testing and treatment long have been part of prenatal care.

"We can't promise to cure babies who are infected. We can promise to prevent the vast majority of transmissions if the moms are tested during every pregnancy," Gay stressed.

The only other person considered cured of the AIDS virus underwent a very different and risky kind of treatment ? a bone marrow transplant from a special donor, one of the rare people who is naturally resistant to HIV. Timothy Ray Brown of San Francisco has not needed HIV medications in the five years since that transplant.

The Mississippi case shows "there may be different cures for different populations of HIV-infected people," said Dr. Rowena Johnston of amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research. That group funded Persaud's team to explore possible cases of pediatric cures.

It also suggests that scientists should look back at other children who've been treated since shortly after birth, including some reports of possible cures in the late 1990s that were dismissed at the time, said Dr. Steven Deeks of the University of California, San Francisco, who also has seen the findings.

"This will likely inspire the field, make people more optimistic that this is possible," he said.

In the Mississippi case, the mother had had no prenatal care when she came to a rural emergency room in advanced labor. A rapid test detected HIV. In such cases, doctors typically give the newborn low-dose medication in hopes of preventing HIV from taking root. But the small hospital didn't have the proper liquid kind, and sent the infant to Gay's medical center. She gave the baby higher treatment-level doses.

The child responded well through age 18 months, when the family temporarily quit returning and stopped treatment, researchers said. When they returned several months later, remarkably, Gay's standard tests detected no virus in the child's blood.

Ten months after treatment stopped, a battery of super-sensitive tests at half a dozen laboratories found no sign of the virus' return. There were only some remnants of genetic material that don't appear able to replicate, Persaud said.

In Mississippi, Gay gives the child a check-up every few months: "I just check for the virus and keep praying that it stays gone."

The mother's HIV is being controlled with medication and she is "quite excited for her child," Gay added.
