Moran: Raised Catholic, the church made me 'a spiritual refugee'

I was born into a devout Catholic family, the fifth of nine children. And one of my earliest memories is learning the catechism from my father, a sales executive who was in the habit of going to church every day before work.

He read me stories about the adventures of a boy who was nicknamed ?Raggie? because his family was too poor to buy new clothes. Each story had the same basic lesson ? good Catholics look after those in need, just as Jesus did. And there is no shame in being poor.

Sign me up. I memorized the prayers, received the sacraments and felt ecstatically cleansed after monthly confessions. I was all in.

In the decades since, I have fled a million miles from the church, and have never found a new religious home. I am a spiritual refugee.

One in three American adults was raised in a Catholic family, but fewer than one in four identify as Catholic today. No other church has shed so many followers, according to surveys by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

So if I am a refugee, I am walking on a road that is crowded with others who feel the same way.

Which brings us to my recent conversation with Newark Archbishop John Myers, and his attempt to sway the election to Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

He didn?t say that, of course. But he wrote a letter last week saying Catholics have a ?duty? to cast their vote based on opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion rights.

Gay sex, he wrote, is a purely ?selfish enjoyment? because it ?lacks openness to the procreative meaning of human sexuality.?

Gay parents are bad for children. And if the government grants equal marriage rights to homosexuals, it will soon invade families and churches to impose its moral views, stepping between a parent and child, between a pastor and his flock. Same-sex marriage is a threat to religious freedom.

Finally, he said, all Catholic must embrace his views. And those who refuse should not take Holy Communion.

I?ve gone through stages when it comes to the church, bouncing between anger, estrangement and exasperation. It started when one of my six sisters, at age 10, wrote the Vatican a letter asking why she couldn?t be an altar girl. She never heard back. But the dinner discussions on that planted seeds of revolt in all of us.

They flowered as I began to understand the church?s views on birth control and divorce, which put even my mother on the wrong side of the law, and taught us how Catholics cope with the hierarchy.

A decade after my father died, she married a divorced man, which should have barred her from receiving Holy Communion. Her local priest saw that she would be crushed by that and quietly told her that she was free to take Holy Communion in his church any time she wanted.

?That local priest was wrong,? Myers said when I told him the story last week.

But my mother had no hesitation. Nor did she feel she was sinning by using birth control when she was knocked low by migraine headaches after bearing the nine of us. When she saw same-sex couples raising AIDS babies, she saw no threat to the moral order; she saw Christ?s love at work. She supported same-sex marriage before the New York Times did.

Her obedience to the church hierarchy was not blind, especially after it was exposed as complicit in the sexual abuse of so many children. She trusted her own compass, and in that way, she was a typical Catholic.

Most Catholics, like her, will never leave the church. They will sidestep the land mines and hope for change. They see the altar girls today and hope for female priests tomorrow.

In the meantime, though, men like Myers will drive millions more onto the refugee highway. He had his own small share of complicity in the sex abuse scandal, transferring a priest who had confessed to abuse to St. Michael?s Hospital in Newark without telling the staff. He refuses to release the names of priests who have been credibly accused, as some New Jersey dioceses do.

But the fixation on same-sex marriage may do even more damage in the long run. A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that 53 percent of Catholics support same-sex marriage, a number that rises to 72 percent among those between ages 18 and 34. Remember, they shouldn?t be taking Holy Communion.

Myers swears that his letter was released during the heat of this campaign by pure coincidence. But he did much the same thing a few weeks before the 2004 election. Imagine the odds.

What?s shocking to me is that this 15-page letter, single-spaced, brushes by the problem of poverty and says nothing of Romney?s plan to savage the safety net.

?Catholic citizens must exercise their right to be heard in the public square by defending marriage,? Myers wrote.

I doubt most Catholics will see this election in such pinched terms. They know how to sidestep this land mine, too.

Because if you visit any poor neighborhood in New Jersey, you can see a more vibrant Catholicism at work in schools, hospitals and food pantries. I?m pretty sure Raggie would see this election through their eyes.

His was the Catholicism I was taught. And it was all about love.

Climate change could cripple southwestern U.S. forests: Trees face rising drought stress and mortality as climate warms

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Combine the tree-ring growth record with historical information, climate records, and computer-model projections of future climate trends, and you get a grim picture for the future of trees in the southwestern United States. That's the word from a team of scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Arizona, and other partner organizations.

If the Southwest is warmer and drier in the near future, widespread tree death is likely and would cause substantial changes in the distribution of forests and of species, the researchers report this week in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Southwestern forests grow best when total winter precipitation is high combined with a summer and fall that aren't too hot and dry.

The team developed a Forest Drought-Stress Severity Index that combines the amount of winter precipitation, late summer and fall temperatures, and late summer and fall precipitation into one number.

"The new 'Forest Drought-Stress Index' that Williams devised from seasonal precipitation and temperature-related variables matches the records of changing forest conditions in the Southwest remarkably well," said co-author Thomas W. Swetnam, director of the UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research.

"Among all climate variables affecting trees and forests that have ever been studied, this new drought index has the strongest correlation with combined tree growth, tree death from drought and insects, and area burned by forest fires that I have ever seen."

A. Park Williams of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico is the lead author of the paper, "Temperature as a potent driver of regional forest drought stress and tree mortality." Six of the paper's 15 authors are at the UA. A complete list of authors is at the bottom of this release.

To figure out which climate variables affect forests, the researchers aligned some 13,000 tree core samples with known temperature and moisture data. The team also blended in events known from tree-ring, archaeological and other paleorecords, such as the late 1200s megadrought that drove the ancient Pueblo Indians out of longtime settlements such as those at Mesa Verde, Colo.

By comparing the tree-ring record to climate data collected in the Southwest since the late 1800s, the scientists identified two climate variables that estimate annual southwestern tree-growth variability with exceptional accuracy: total winter precipitation and average summer-fall atmospheric evaporative demand, a measure of the overall dryness of the environment.

Williams said, "Atmospheric evaporative demand is primarily driven by temperature. When air is warmer, it can hold more water vapor, thus increasing the pace at which soil and plants dry out. The air literally sucks the moisture out of the soil and plants."

Finding that summer-fall atmospheric evaporative demand is just as important as winter precipitation has critical implications for the future of southwestern forests, he said.

These trends, the researchers noted, are already occurring in the Southwest, where temperatures generally have been increasing for the past century and are expected to continue to do so because of accumulating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

There still will be wet winters, but increased frequency of warmer summers will put more stress on trees and limit their growth after wet winters, the study reports.

"We can use the past to learn about the future," Williams said. "For example, satellite fire data from the past 30 years show that there has been a strong and exponential relationship between the regional tree-ring drought-stress record and the area of southwestern forests killed by wildfire each year. This suggests that if drought intensifies, we can expect forests not only to grow more slowly, but also to die more quickly."

The study points out that very large and severe wildfires, bark-beetle outbreaks and a doubling of the proportion of dead trees in response to early 21st-century warmth and drought conditions are evidence that a transition of southwestern forest landscapes toward more open and drought-tolerant ecosystems may already be underway.

And while 2000s drought conditions have been severe, the regional tree-ring record indicates there have been substantially stronger megadrought events during the past 1,000 years.

The strongest megadrought occurred during the second half of the 1200s and is believed to have played an important role in the abandonment of ancient Puebloan cultural centers throughout the Southwest. The most recent megadrought occurred in the late 1500s and appears to have been strong enough to kill many trees in the Southwest.

"When we look at our tree-ring record, we see this huge dip in the 1580s when all the tree rings are really tiny," Williams said. "Following the 1500s megadrought, tree rings get wider, and there was a major boom in new trees. Nearly all trees we see in the Southwest today were established after the late-1500s drought, even though the species we evaluated can easily live longer than 400 years. So that event is a benchmark for us today. If forest drought stress exceeds late 1500 levels, we expect that a lot of trees are going to be dying."

Will future forest drought-stress levels reach or exceed those of the megadroughts of the 1200s and 1500s?

Using climate-model projections, the team projected that such megadrought-type forest drought-stress conditions will be exceeded regularly by the 2050s. If climate-model projections are correct, forest drought-stress levels during even the wettest and coolest years of the late 21st century will be more severe than the driest, warmest years of the previous megadroughts.

The study forecasts that during the second half of this century, about 80 percent of years will exceed megadrought levels.

The current drought, which began in 2000, is a natural case study about what to expect from projected climate scenarios. While average winter precipitation totals in the Southwest have not been exceptionally low, average summer-fall evaporative demand is the highest on record.

And trees, Williams says, are paying the price. The team concluded forest drought stress during more than 30 percent of the past 13 years, including 2011 and 2012, matched or exceeded the megadrought-type levels of the 1200s and 1500s. The only other 13-year periods when megadrought-type conditions were reached with such frequencies in the past 1,000 years were during the megadroughts themselves.

UA co-author Daniel Griffin said, "This research is distinctly different from work done in a similar vein in two ways: One, it puts these projections for the future in a concrete historical context, and two, it shows that the impacts on the forests will not be restricted to one species or one site at low elevation, but in fact will take place at forests across the landscape."

Griffin is a doctoral candidate in the UA School of Geography and Development.

Co-author Craig D. Allen, a research ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said, "Consistent with many other recent studies, these findings provide compelling additional evidence of emerging global risks of amplified drought-induced tree mortality and extensive forest die-off as the planet warms."

Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation funded the research.

(AP) ? The Russian Orthodox Church on Sunday asked for clemency for three jailed members of the rock band Pussy Riot if they repent for their "punk prayer" for deliverance from President Vladimir Putin at Moscow's main cathedral, a statement that came a day before an appeal hearing and appeared to reflect a desire to put an end to the case that has caused an international outrage.

But it was unclear whether the women, who were sentenced to two years last month, would offer a penitence sought by the church and how much leniency a court may show. Putin has always been reluctant to avoid leaving an impression that he could bow to public pressure and has taken an increasingly tough line on dissent since his inauguration in May.

Monday's appeal hearing has caught their family members between hope and despair as they attempt to gauge from the words and actions of government and church officials whether the political tide will turn in their favor.

In Sunday's statement, the church reaffirmed its condemnation of the women's raucous stunt, saying such actions "can't be left unpunished." But it added that if the women show "penitence and reconsideration of their action," their words "shouldn't be left unnoticed."

Earlier this month, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that keeping them in prison any longer would be "unproductive" ? a statement that encouraged hopes the appeals court could set them free. But skeptics said that ahead of the band members' conviction on charges of "hooliganism driven by religious hatred," Putin himself said the women should not be judged too harshly, raising similar hopes for their release that proved vain.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, were arrested in March after dancing and high-kicking at Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral as they pleaded with the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Putin, who was elected to a third presidential term two weeks later. They said during their trial in August that they were protesting the Russian Orthodox Church's support for Putin and didn't intend to offend religious believers.

Both the government and the church may have a strong interest in putting the Pussy Riot case behind them to avoid further damage at home and abroad.

The band members' imprisonment has come to symbolize intolerance of dissent in Putin's Russia and caused a strong international condemnation. Their cause has been taken up by celebrities and musicians, including Madonna and Paul McCartney, and protests have been held around the world.

Even some government loyalists criticized the harsh sentence, voicing concern about the church's interference in secular affairs and a growing repressive streak in the Kremlin's policies.

Since his inauguration in May, Putin has taken an increasingly tough stance against dissent in response to a series of massive winter protests against his 13-year rule.

Opposition activists have faced interrogations and searches, and the Kremlin-controlled parliament quickly stamped a slew of draconian bills, including the one that raised fines 150-fold for taking part in unsanctioned protests and another obliging those non-government organizations that receive foreign funds to register as "foreign agents."

In a clear nod to the Pussy Riot stunt, pro-Kremlin lawmakers last week discussed a new bill that would make "offending religious feelings" a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

Actions like these have left the friends, families, and lawyers of the Pussy Riot women pessimistic about the possibility of a successful appeal.

Violetta Volkova, one of the three lawyers for the women, said Friday after visiting a prison where they are being held that she had little hope for a fair sentence in a country where courts bow to the authorities.

"There is always at least some minimal hope for common sense and that the court will act in accordance with the law," she said. "But given the political situation in Russia, we can't depend on a legal sentence."

Stanislav Samutsevich, the father of one of the women, said he also had little hope, saying that he believed the government would use the appeals process to "in some way justify the severe sentence imposed."

Friends and family say they have tried to keep the women busy with books and letters to try to lighten their mood.

Olga Vinogradova, a children's librarian, book reviewer, and longtime friend of the convicted Maria Alekhina, sent her philosophy books to read. She said she received messages from Alekhina once or twice a week.

Like Tolokonnikova, Alekhina is the mother of a young child, a 5-year-old boy, a fact which has drawn particular sympathy from supporters of the women, who have been behind bars since their arrest in March.

"One thing that she wrote to me in a letter is that . she couldn't pay a higher price than such a long separation from her child," said Vinogradova. "For her freedom to speak her mind that is the greatest price."

Vinogradova said that in her exchanges with Alekhina her friend had expressed little hope of leaving with an effective appeal.

"She's scared about what's happening now, with the new laws," said Vinogradova, "I think she may have expected more from the protest movement."

Obama's lead over Romney dips to 5 points: Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's lead over Republican Mitt Romney dipped slightly to five percentage points ahead of next week's first debate in the race for the White House, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday.

Obama leads Romney among likely voters by 47 percent to 42 percent in the daily online tracking poll, down from Thursday's 7-point advantage of 49 percent to 42 percent.

"I don't think this is a big worry for Obama, but it does support what we've been saying all along - this is going to be a close race," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said.

"I expect we're going to start seeing these numbers move even closer as we get nearer to Election Day," she said.

The two White House contenders meet on Wednesday in the first of three debates that will set the tone for the final five-week sprint to the November 6 election.

Obama has opened up a measurable lead over Romney in most national polls and in surveys of key swing states that could ultimately decide the election.

But Romney stabilized his reeling campaign in the last week after several recent setbacks, most notably the release of a secretly recorded video showing him telling wealthy donors that Obama supporters were government-dependent victims who did not pay taxes.

The Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll has found Obama's ratings slipping over the past week on a range of personal attributes, although he still leads Romney in all categories except "being a man of faith."

Obama lost ground on attributes like "understands people like me", where he is down four points from 46 percent to 42 percent, and "is a good person," which is down four points from 47 percent to 43 percent.

Romney's personal ratings remained steady on most attributed, although he declined three points to 21 percent on "would be fun to meet in person."

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of 3.8 percentage points for likely voters and 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.

How do American moms feel about working outside the home?

mom at home

?

Re-posted from the latest Family In America newsletter:

A recent survey hosted by ForbesWoman and TheBump.com attempts to capture how American women feel about the economy and working outside the home. It found that working moms are, in general, ?an unhappy lot,? further supporting the fact that men and women are not interchangeable cogs in the employment and domestic worlds.

Of the 1,000 women surveyed, 67% worked outside the home. The remaining 33% were stay-at-home moms. The majority of both groups agreed that staying at home with the children was a luxury few could afford. Most (69%) of working moms said their families needed the extra income. But the conflict between children and finances left all women feeling pressured: ? . . . more than half (52%) of the women surveyed say their partners or others sometimes make them feel that they aren?t devoting enough time to their child/children. And 44% of stay-at-home moms say their partner or others sometimes make them feel like they?re not pulling their own financial weight.

Neither sex, apparently, can decide whether family finances or the children should be women?s primary focus. Around 10 percent of stay-at-home moms wish they had remained in the office rather than leaving to have children. Overall, though, stay-at-home moms are more content with their lot: Almost half (47%) of working moms believed they would be happier at home, while only 19% of stay-at-home moms wanted to trade places with their working sisters.

The Family in America is a journal of public policy published online by The Howard Centre for Family, Religion and Society. Its current issue has a very interesting discussion of the much maligned 1950s.

Clashes between Syrian troops, rebels spark fire in historical district of Aleppo

AFP

Raging battles between Syrian government forces and rebels in the historic districts of central Aleppo have started a major fire that threatens to destroy the city's medieval souks, or markets, activists said Saturday.

The labyrinth of narrow alleys lined with shops was once a major tourist attraction, but has been the scene of near-daily firefights and shelling in recent weeks, after rebels who fought their way into the city two months ago pushed toward its center. Some activists described the overnight blaze as the worst blow yet to a district that helped make the heart of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The fire started late Friday amid heavy government shelling and was still burning Saturday morning, activists said. Video posted online showed a pall of smoke hanging over the city.

One Aleppo-based activist, Ahmad al-Halabi, estimated the fire destroyed a majority of the shops in the district. "It's a disaster. The fire is threatening to spread to remaining shops," said al-Halabi, speaking from the stricken area by telephone.

He claimed Syrian authorities cut the water supply off the city, making it more difficult to put out the fire. He said rebels and civilians were working together to control the fire with a limited number of fire extinguishers. "It is a very difficult and tragic situation there," he said.

Rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad launched Thursday what they said would be a "decisive battle" to drive his forces out of Aleppo and fighting has since spread to wide swaths of the city.

Since the rebel offensive began in August, each side has controlled about half of the city and has repeatedly tried - but failed - to capture the rest. Aleppo would be a major strategic prize, giving the victor new momentum. The souks (markets), a maze of vaulted passageways with shops that sell everything from foods, fabrics, perfumes, spices and artisan souvenirs, lie beneath Aleppo's towering citadel where activists say regime troops and snipers have taken up positions.

Many of the shops have wooden doors, and clothes, fabrics and leather inside helped spread the fire, activists said.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a wide network of activists on the ground, said it was not clear how the fire was started but also said a large part of the souks have been destroyed.

The claims could not be independently verified because of limitations on the work of journalists in Syria.

Soil samples taken in new search for Jimmy Hoffa

Bill Pugliano / Getty Images

Police officials prepare to drill through a concrete driveway to obtain a soil sample that will be tested for signs of human decomposition at a site where a tipster reported that the body of former Teamster's union boss Jimmy Hoffa could be buried in Roseville, Mich.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Police in Roseville, Mich., drilled into the ground Friday and took soil samples in the latest effort to find the remains of notorious Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa.

Hank Walker/Time Life Pictures/Getty Images

Teamsters' boss Jimmy Hoffa in an undated image.

The decades-long investigation for Hoffa's body has had false leads before, and some experts are already knocking down the idea that Hoffa, who was last seen on July 30, 1975, outside a restaurant in Oakland County, Mich. -- 30 miles west of where police dug Friday -- could be buried in Roseville, a Detroit suburb.

The most recent investigation was launched after police in Roseville received a tip from a man in August who said he saw a body being buried underneath the driveway 35 years ago and "thinks it may have been Jimmy."

Police dug for about an hour and a half on Friday morning. They told NBC News' John Yang they were collecting soil samples around the home because ground-penetrating radar indicated the presence of something about two feet below the surface; officers came out of a shed with two cylindrical soil samples that were two inches in diameter and six feet long.

The soil samples are going to be hand-delivered by Roseville Police Chief James Berlin to a Michigan State University forensic anthropologist, who is expected to have the results of the samples as early as Monday afternoon. If human remains are found, the ground will be dug up.

The shed on the Roseville home's property is not the same one that was there when Hoffa disappeared in 1975, the police chief said.?

The tipster who prompted the search spoke with police on Aug. 22 and didn't come forward sooner out of fear, reported WDIV in Detroit.

Feisty and iron-willed in contract talks, Hoffa was an acquaintance of mobsters and adversary of federal officials. He spent time in prison for jury tampering.?

The day he disappeared, Hoffa was supposed to meet with a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit mafia captain. He was declared legally dead in 1982.?

Previous tips led police to excavate soil in 2006 at a horse farm more than 100 miles north of Detroit, rip up floorboards at a Detroit home in 2004 and search beneath a backyard pool north of the city in 2003.

There were even rumors that Hoffa's remains were ground up and tossed into a Florida swamp, entombed beneath Giants Stadium in New Jersey or obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant.

Roseville is one of several inner-ring communities that grew quickly as unionized auto factory workers left Detroit in search of nicer homes and bigger yards.

News of the latest search has brought attention to the mostly working- and middle-class suburb from the curious and naysayers. Slowly moving vehicles have clogged the residential street where the home sits as camera-wielding neighbors snapped photos for keepsakes.

"I believe it's him. My sister said it is, and she's a psychic," Mike Smith said after ambling up to the home Thursday and shying a bit from the yellow police tape stretched across the driveway.

One theory that has endured was that the body was beneath the foundation of a downtown Detroit hockey stadium, said 57-year-old Cindi Frank, who snapped photos Thursday of the Roseville driveway.

The daughter of a unionized driver and salesman for a Detroit bakery, Frank remembers conversations about Hoffa while he was alive and rumors about his fate.

"It was a family thing. Every time we'd go somewhere we'd say, 'Hey, I wonder if Jimmy Hoffa is buried there?'" Frank said. "It's just been one of those unsolved mysteries that's gone on for 30-something years. If he show up in Roseville ..."

Recently retired Detroit FBI chief Andrew Arena is among the doubters that the latest report will check out.

"You've got to check it out, but this doesn't sound right," he told the AP. "The working theories that have developed over the years, this really doesn't fit any of those. If this was the mob and they killed somebody, I just don't see them burying the body basically at the intersection of a residential neighborhood with this guy standing there."?

Some think the least likely spot for him to turn up might just be the place he does.

"Maybe the most inconspicuous spot might be the place to stash a body or something," said 52-year-old Andrew Kacir, who lives across from the taped off driveway.?

Atheists target praying politicians (poll) | religion, right, foundation ...

September 27, 2012 4:52 PM

Take a lead from Colorado Spring City Councilman Bernie Herpin, who plans to defend the First Amendment. We direct this advice at any politician who may be inclined to fear the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The foundation blew hot air in the direction of the Pueblo City Council, threatening to sue because council members pray at meetings. As its name implies, this confused organization believes we have government-protected freedom from religion in addition to our freedom to pick and choose religious beliefs or to ignore and avoid them all. While we have a right to shun religion, we do not have a right to government protection from the sights and sounds of religion in public ? even on government property.

As such, one might expect Pueblo politicians to ignore the foundation?s threat. Instead, they fell over without putting up a fight. We expect a more vigorous defense of our most basic freedoms ? religious liberty and free speech.

Because our laws protect free speech in public and private ? and on government property? anti-religion activists were able to set up a stage last March on the Washington Mall to express their beliefs. Musician Tim Minchin performed a song that compared Pope Benedict XVI to a ?mother (explitive) rapist.? He called Catholics ?papists? (a Ku Klux Klan term) and directed more than 75 f-bombs at them. It was part of an atheist rally that presented a litany of speakers who blasphemed Christianity with accusations and vulgarity.

Governments often host and support expressions of atheist beliefs and anti-religious sentiments. Only the most extreme examples ? pornographic portrayals of Jesus, a crucifix in urine and elephant dung on Mary ? get much press.

Laws that allow government-sponsored expressions against religion must allow government-sponsored expressions that are reverent to religion. If not, government establishes belief systems hostile to God over belief systems friendly to God. The First Amendment and our courts no more allow government establishment of atheism or secularism than they allow establishment of Christianity.

Out of respect for a free marketplace of religious beliefs, legislatures and local governing boards often invite priests, rabbis, imams and others to lead them in prayer.

Just not in Pueblo, from now on. Because council members buckled to anti-religion activists, they will start meetings with a moment of silence. That?s OK, but why encourage the false notion that one group of believers ? atheists, who believe there is no God ? are protected from expressions of other believers. They are not. We cannot have freedom of expression and protection from expression.

Having scored in Pueblo, the foundation will likely try to silence prayer at council meetings in the Springs.

?I am not going to try to force my views on somebody and nor do I appreciate them trying to force their views on me,? Councilman Herpin said in a conversation with Gazette reporter Daniel Chacon, explaining why he will not succumb to pressure from atheists.

Anti-religion activists do not cower from denouncing God in government space, so no one should fear praying in government space. Feel free to pray aloud and defend the rights of religious Americans to enjoy the same freedoms afforded those who oppose their beliefs.

That's our view, so what's yours? Please begin or contribute to a Facebook discussion below this article.

Personal Loans for People in Necessity ? Chris finance blog

pIn terms of managing our debt, numerous recommendation is offered by a number of experts. But maybe probably the most confusing piece is the one urging us to take out a mortgage as a way to clear present debts. Taking out personal loans for below-average credit management sounds unhealthy however its the contrary.br /br /For a href=http://www.helpmeineedmoney.org/personal-loans target=_blankPersonal Loans/a, the possibilities of getting quick loan approval are greater due to the desired purpose of the mortgage, and the fact that the borrower is clearly severe about escaping financial scorching water. And given that the new mortgage is extra manageable than the original 4, the risk of defaulting is far less.br /br /The new types of a href=http://www.helpmeineedmoney.org/personal-loans target=_blankPersonal Loans/a are extra affordable due to the structure of the debt. While the principal borrowed is as high as the 4 loans mentioned, with only one interest rate to contemplate, the overall interest is loweredbr /These in need of companies ought to know the place and how you can get the very best deals to enable them save money. The process of making use of online is simpler and sooner and no security or collateral are required. The only challenging thing for the applicant is discovering a legal firm prioritizing the curiosity of the customer. Flexibility and terms that fits the clients needs are factors that should be considered.br /br /By way of the usage of internet its easy to seek out the most effective online websites offering loans and the details that have to be provided. The non-public data that an individual provides is used to find out whether a person qualifies for the financial assistance. The element contains citizenship, age, occupation, kind of mortgage, credit rating, residential space amongst other private and monetary information.br /br /Think about whether the mortgage will probably be secured or unsecured because the rates charged differ. When secured, the charges are low therefore lowering the quantity paid in the long run of the process. If unsecured the creditor uses higher rates as a result of this deal is taken into account to be dangerous and generally further prices are included.br /br /A client should inquire on how the firm will handle the credit score because every firm does issues differently. Do the characters have to remain the same species? I'd really like to change something and could I reserve Jenna Sommers?

@ThornGood

I'd prefer if they did, but if you want to change it then go ahead. Like I said on the introduction page, they're yours to change. The only thing that must remain similar are the couples, whether they get together straight away or later on in the roleplay.

I'll reserve Jenne for you, no problem. My limitation on reserving is two days at most, so try to get the application up as soon as possible.

Any problems, PM me.

LG Venice

Boost Mobile has announced a new addition to their lineup, the LG Venice. The Venice will represent an attractive choice to customers who prefer a no contract phone, especially because it has decent specs for the price. While not equal to the top of the line phones, they're nothing to scoff at either.

The Venice boasts:

  • 4.3-inch screen (with Gorilla Glass)
  • 1GHz processor
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • LG Optimus 3.0 interface
  • 5MP camera
  • 720p video recording

The Venice will cost $219.99 and remember that Boost Mobile offers all of their devices with no contract. They also offer a $55/month unlimited plan. It will be available starting Oct. 10 at Boost Mobile retail stores, certain independent retailers and online. In late October, you'll be able to pick one up in select nationwide retailers.

The full press release is after the break.

Production-ready Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive supercar unveiled

We're pretty sure we've suffered some amount of vision loss from staring at the ridiculously bright paint scheme on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell over the past few years. MB has rolled it out at virtually every auto show it can and we've always stopped for a gander, but now we finally have the full production version -- and it's in a slightly more tame but visually perhaps even more stunning color, a sort of chrome blue that even in the flesh looks CG rendered. It's the SLS AMG Electric Drive, it's launching next June and we have the full details after the break.

11 Bars/Restaurants that opened in Bushwick within past 6 months ...

It?s a paradox, but maybe blogging about Bushwick sometimes makes you not realize all the changes that have been happening right in front of my eyes SO quickly. ?Everything is different! Look at all those new bars!? said one of my all time favorite street artists, Over Under when I ran into him biking down Jefferson St. yesterday where he was working on a mural with N?DA. ?True? there is at least 10 new bars?? I thought to myself.?Over Under left Brooklyn a couple of months ago, to spend some time on the west coast, and his absence probably made him see all the changes clearer.

Bushwick is clearly becoming the hot destination for?entrepreneurs?in bar and restaurant business. The question is whether the neighborhood really needs so many new bars; try to walk into any of these places on a Saturday night, and the ratio of the staff and the guests will be your answer (I think it varies from very crowded to very empty). It also seems that most of these new establishment owners are seriously nice people who came to Bushwick to fulfill their life-long dream, and are really supportive of each other. It really shows if someone is running a place with love, and the new places are mostly really great. ?The last, probably the most important questions on everyone?s mind is, ?how will all the new places influence the rents in the area?

Let?s count the new bars and/or restaurants together?.?

#1 Mazelle

Eastern European flavours inspire the menu at?Mazelle.?The cheese and charcuterie plate offers a selection of Russian and Ukrainian meats,?and the?kachipuri?bread is hand made by?an?old man with the only oven?of its?kind outside of Georgia. So there?you have it, a nod, apparently, to?yesteryear?baking. [Read full article]

#2 Cobra Club

How wobbly does my tree pose really need to be? Cobra Club, Bushwick?s newest yoga studio, is also a fully licensed bar. Let?s be clear here, though: the tipple is a post-practice activity at Cobra Club. Although there is a Sunday ?hangover session?, where I can only hope the headstands are optional. #4 Mama Joy?s?

Being a barfly doesn?t mean that one would be excused for not trying that food, at the very least one must sample the hushpuppies. Hushpuppies are another southern delight that I associate strongly with frying freshly caught catfish. Another corn creation, hushpuppies are made from a cornmeal batter (here with celery, corn and jalepe?os added to the mix) that is then deep fried. They come with a dipping sauce that makes the hushpuppies worth having every time. [Read full article]

#5 Alaska

It?s a spacious bar, dimly lit and has many little design details to pay attention to. Also, being that it?s around the corner from?56 Bogart?you may soon catch a few art heads in there having a drink and a chat.?Over a selection of bourbons, beers, house drinks [try the Alaska if you're in the mood for gin], and Bourbon Milkshakes. #7 The Well

The Well is a high-end venue, and by high-end I mean high-end in the best possible sense. The creators of the venue took the Bushwick hipness, industrially romantic?aesthetics and world class music, and mashed it together to arrive on the scene just in time. [Read full article]

#9 Dear Bushwick?

Dear Buswick at Wilson Ave (photo by Peter Dressel)

We had the pleasure to taste wine-barreled smoked eggs with horseradish butter, house beer pork sausage with rhubarb and pickled mustard seeds (a favorite of mine), and whiskey-infused chicken p?t? on sourdough bread. Each had an unforgettably flavorful taste. The pairings were strange, much like what you?ll find in modern English restaurants today. [Read full article]

#10 Skytown

The sign on the front of the door says ?Best Egg Sandwich in Brooklyn? and, boy, was it one of the best egg sandwiches in Brooklyn with arugula, goat cheese, and tomato on a roll. The olive oil granola with yogurt had seasonal fruits, a perfect healthy meal. The Skytown bowl is a medley of grains (in this case rice), the vegetable of the week (green cauliflower), beans, avocado, kale, red cabbage and cheese cooked together. It reminded me a bit of a bibimbap without the egg and the crunchy part. [Read full article]

The explosion occurred today 35 KM North of Balhaf Liquefaction Plant. It caused no victims, the company said in a statement.

ATF probes blast near U.S. House hopeful's Indiana home

Federal agents and local police are investigating an explosion outside Democratic congressional candidate Brendan Mullen's northern Indiana home.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents say the blast Monday afternoon in a newspaper box outside Mullen's home in Granger, Ind., is among four this week in the area eight miles northeast of South Bend. ATF Indiana spokesman Dave Coulson said Tuesday that nobody was hurt and investigators believe the four incidents may be connected.

Mullen spokesman Andy Reynolds says police are investigating a bottle that was placed inside the newspaper box. Reynolds says Mullen and some campaign staff were working from the house when they heard the explosion.

Mullen is running against Republican Jackie Walorski for the northern Indiana seat being vacated by Democratic Senate candidate Joe Donnelly.

Samsung's flagship phone and chief?iPhone 5 competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S III, should be getting the latest version of Android, 4.1, and also known as Jelly Bean. Oddly, the first country where the update for the phone?will be available is Poland.

Samsung, locked in a fierce battle with Apple on many fronts, shipped the Galaxy S III with Android 4.0.?

The add-ons that 4.1 bring can only make the S III even more desirable for customers. It includes Google Now, which predicts what information you'll need and want before you even ask for it by learning your habits and interests; improved Google voice search; and a notification bar that can expand to show you a portion of your email inbox instead of just the number of emails waiting to take up your time.

In an email to The Verge, a?Samsung representative?said Jelly Bean will "gradually" be introduced to other markets, something that will "vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements."?

GigaOM noted that "it?s likely that Samsung is using (Poland) as a test for its update process," so American users need to remain patient.

Other phones?in line for the upgrade, according to Samsung, include?the?Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Chat, Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy Mini 2, and Galaxy S Duos.

The new?Samsung Galaxy Note II, a 5.5-inch-screen phone/tablet (termed by some as a "phablet"),?due out in the U.S. by mid-November, will also ship with Jelly Bean.
