NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks rose in early trading on Wall Street Tuesday after several big companies turned in solid earnings. An increase in U.S. home prices sent home builder stocks higher.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46 points, or 0.3 percent, to 15,568 in the first hour of trading.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up five points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,690. Seven of the index's 10 industry sectors rose, led by utilities and technology companies.
The Nasdaq composite rose 18 points, or 0.5 percent, to 3,617.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber jumped 12 percent to $19.06, the biggest gain in the S&P 500, after reporting that its second-quarter earnings more than doubled. Sales in Latin America rose sharply.
Investors were also keeping a close eye on the Federal Reserve. The central bank began a two-day policy meeting Tuesday.
The Federal Reserve has been buying $85 billion in bonds every month to keep interest rates low and encourage borrowing and hiring. The Fed has said it might start to pull back on the stimulus later this year if the economy continues to improve, but the timing remains uncertain.
The Fed has also kept its benchmark short-term interest rate close to zero and has said it would stay there until the unemployment rate dips below 6.5 percent. The rate currently stands at 7.6 percent.
Shares of homebuilders rose after a report showing that U.S. home prices jumped 12.2 percent in May compared with a year ago, the biggest yearly gain since March 2006.
KB Home rose 21 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $17.09 and PulteGroup rose 16 cents, or 1 percent, to $16.55.
The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index surged 2.4 percent in May from April, nearly matching the previous monthly gain of 2.6 percent ? the highest on record.
Crude oil fell $1 to $103.56 a barrel in New York. The price of gold fell $5.90 to $1,322.50 an ounce. The dollar rose against the euro and the Japanese yen.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged down to 2.58 percent from 2.60 percent the day before.
Among other stocks making big moves:
? Time Warner Cable fell $1.59, or 1.3 percent, to $113.70. The giant cable company is enmeshed in a nasty fee dispute with CBS over programming fees and threatening to pull the broadcaster off its systems.
? Pfizer rose 42 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $29.97 after the pharmaceutical company reported that its income more than quadrupled, helped by the sale of its animal health business.
? Masco jumped $1.33, or 6.7 percent. The home furnishings company posted earnings that beat the forecasts of financial analysts as the company benefited from a surge in home construction.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- If running an agency with 55,0000 employees and a $70 billion budget is overwhelming, you would never know it from the casual, upbeat entrance of Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx.
"I've heard people say 'How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.'? You know, there's only so much you can do in one day," said Foxx during an interview with NBC Charlotte at DOT headquarters in Washington.
Secretary Foxx's first week on the job began with a deadly plane crash in San Francisco.
"I was in Target buying shower curtains for my kids and I got the call and rushed here to the crisis management center and from there continued to follow details of the incident."
The pull of this job is enormous, especially tough when those you love the most have yet to make the move to DC.? Foxx's wife, Samara, and his two kids will join him later this summer.? Foxx spoke about the demands of his job.?
"In some ways this role will be more taxing in terms of the day and travel and the work that goes on behind the scenes to make things happen in this department and elsewhere. But in other respects, there are other responsibilities I don't have that I had as mayor. There are parades that I don't have to attend and dinners that I don't have to go to."
With few hours for fun, it is almost cruel that the Washington Nationals' ballpark is next door to DOT Headquarters.? But there are perks.?
Proximity to the President is a given as a cabinet secretary and, for the first time recently, Foxx traveled onboard Air Force One.
"It was an opportunity to spend some quality time with the President and talking about some of the infrastructure issues that are so important to both of us."
Those issues include navigating the congested? DC streets. "I'm reminded every day how easy Charlotte is to get around,." Said Foxx.
For this Charlotte native, it is clear, Carolina is never far from his heart or his mind.? But Secretary Foxx plays it coy when it comes to his future.?
When asked about speculation that he might run for governor in 2016, he simply smiled and responded,? "Oh, you know, I love North Carolina."

Microsoft can throw its Windows XP retirement party, if it wants, but I won't count myself among the celebrants. Like millions (more likely many hundreds of millions) of people around the world, I have very good reasons for keeping Windows XP alive and kicking.
My leanings aside, Microsoft's attempts to get people to give up Windows XP have turned from somber to stupid. On the somber side, back on April 9, 2012, Microsoft posted on the Windows Blog a reasoned and detailed description of the many benefits of moving away from Windows XP. Unfortunately, the central tenent of that argument seems seriously flawed:
Windows XP and Office 2003 were great software releases for their time, but the technology environment has shifted. Technology continues to evolve and so do people's needs and expectations. Modern users demand technologies that fit their personal workstyle and allow them to stay productive anywhere anytime, while businesses have an ever increasing need to protect data and ensure security, compliance and manageability. It is in a company's -- and its employees' -- best interest to take advantage of the modern Windows and Office software that is designed with these needs in mind.
I'm a reasonably modern user -- I've beaten both Win7 and Win8, hard, written books about them, since the first betas hit -- but I don't demand Windows technologies that fit my personal "workstyle." In fact, I tend to think of "Windows technologies that fit my personal workstyle" as an oxymoron.
On the stupid side, last week Microsoft unveiled one of the dumbest infographics ever created, a call to "Get modern with Windows 8 Pro/Happy Retirement Windows XP/Thanks for all your hard work." The eight (get it?) reasons given for moving to Windows 8 include such gems as "The new Start screen is smooth and intuitive, and gives you instant access to your people, apps and stuff, so you spend less time searching and more time doing," and "From the moment you turn it on, you'll have a set of built-in apps for the things you do most," and tossed in at the bottom as an afterthought "Windows 8.1 advances the vision set forward with Windows 8 ... It's Windows 8 but even better."
My favorite stupid WinXP trick: Microsoft's very own Windows XP Countdown Gadget, which shows the number of days, hours, and minutes until WinXP gets the ax. It's cute because it only works in Vista and Win 7 -- like all Gadgets, it won't work in Windows XP, and it won't work in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows RT.
As for my justification for keeping XP, stuck in the corner of one of my closets lies an ancient IBM (yes, IBM) ThinkPad, with a very important distinction: It has an old-fashioned COM port. Pieces of brittle plastic fall off from time to time, and the creaking hinge always leaves me cringing for fear that the screen will finally fall off. But that old beast runs a proprietary piece of software that's vital for updating a specific line of Casio cash registers. My wife's business runs on those old Casio cash registers, and if that ThinkPad goes, her business goes, too. The WinXP program has a hardwired reference to COM1, and I can't get it to work on anything but an old-fashioned XP PC with a COM1 port. All the futzing I've done over the years -- USB-to-COM1 adapters, Win7 XP Mode, VM connections, even add-on serial port adapters -- don't work. I've finally given up, realizing it isn't worth spending all that time to fix something that, truly, isn't broken.
Some day my wife will get rid of the old cash registers. When she does, she'll undoubtedly get a cheap, easy Android-based POS system and dump the old Win XP POS. For now, that kind of expense doesn't make any sense.
Everywhere I look, I see old Windows XP systems that just work. After years fighting all the old battles and blue screens, these Win XP machines have been knocked into submission, and they do what they were intended to do: drive POS systems, as well as run industrial networks, kiosks, teller transactions, arcade games, transportation systems, basic business activities, the whole gamut of core PC functions. Now we're supposed to throw them out because Microsoft says we need to buy a new version of Windows?
Nobody knows how many Windows XP PCs are out there. The latest NetMarketShare numbers show Windows XP runs on 37 percent of the PCs used to connect to Internet sites in June, but the numbers are highly suspect -- and they don't even pretend to estimate how many XP machines are in the wild. My voice is just one in the wilderness, but you can bet your bottom dollar it's a big wilderness.
Perhaps Microsoft will get away with unilaterally cutting off security patches to Windows XP and Office 2003 next year following the end of active support for the duo on April 8, 2014. It's certainly true that Windows XP has been around since October 2001, and it's getting very long in the tooth. I can sympathize with how much of a burden maintaining old software can be -- it eats right into Microsoft's quarterly profit of $15 billion or so. But you have to wonder if Microsoft can be persuaded to keep Win XP and Office 2003 on life support for a few more years -- perhaps for a nominal fee. At the very least, it'd be nice to get updates to Microsoft Security Essentials for Win XP and Office 2003.

Florida State continues to reel in commitments. On Monday afternoon, Lake Mary, Fla. defensive tackle/offensive lineman Adam Torres made a decision to become a Seminole.
Two weeks ago, he visited FSU during the Jimbo Fisher Camp. He was impressed enough to make a return visit this past weekend, this time with his Mother. After going home to mull things over and discuss his options with his family, he decided it was time to make his decision.
"Yes, I committed to Florida State," he said via text message.
The 6-foot-5, 265 pound prospect selected FSU over South Carolina and Miami He can play on either side of the ball, but will likely end up on defense. He told ScarletNation.com (Rutgers' site on Rivals.com) earlier this year, "I played nose guard last season and had 14 tackles for loss and four sacks," he said."But I'm playing outside next year at D-end."
Torres is FSU's 22nd commitment for the 2014 class and the fourth defensive end. He is ranked No. 33 at his position and No. 60 in the state.

Police have shot dead a gunman who killed six people in a shooting rampage at a Florida apartment building.
The stand-off started when the gunman got into an argument with the husband and wife who ran the apartment complex in the Miami suburb of Hialeah.
Pedro Vargas, 42, opened fire on landlords Italo Pisciotti, 78, and Camira, 68, when they went to his unit to discuss a problem.
Police say he lived in a fourth-floor apartment with his mother and may have been facing eviction.
After he shot dead the landlords, Vargas went to another apartment and killed a man and woman and their teenage daughter.
He then fired from a balcony at a man walking into a building across the street, killing him as well.
He tried to fire at emergency crews and police, missing them but preventing them from giving immediate aid to the victims.
The shooter then took two neighbours hostage and barricaded himself inside a fifth-floor apartment.
Negotiators made contact with him during the night and the SWAT team swarmed in at about 2:00am when talks broke down.
The two hostages escaped unharmed, but the gunman's mother collapsed and was taken to a hospital, police said.
At some point, the gunman managed to set his apartment on fire, leaving the ceiling and hallway charred and setting off sprinklers inside the building.
The apartment complex in the blue-collar, mostly Hispanic community housed about 90 families.

Hundreds of thousands of people took part in rival political rallies in various Egyptian cities on Friday and the violence continued into the night, with reports of at least 100 people killed. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
By Ayman Mohyeldin, Marian Smith and Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News
At least 100 people were killed early Saturday when riot police fired on protesters supporting deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in Cairo, activists said.
The Anti-Coup Alliance, an umbrella coalition of Morsi supporters, also said at least 5,000 people were injured near the clash in the Nasr City neighborhood of the capital.
Many of the bodies of those killed were still at a field hospital near the pro-Morsi protest site and were not officially registered with health officials. The official death toll was based only on bodies tallied at government morgues, so that figure was only at 21.

A supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood holds a mask of ousted president Mohammed Morsi during a rally near Rabaa Adawiya square in Cairo on Friday.
Hundreds of thousands of people took part in rival political rallies in various Egyptian cities on Friday and the violence continued into the night.
Both supporters of the army and Morsi backers had announced they would be protesting Friday and warned there could be bloodshed. Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged Egyptians earlier in the week to hold rallies to give the military a ?mandate? to confront weeks of violence caused by his July 3 overthrow of Morsi, Reuters reported.
"Sisi out! Morsi is president! Down with the army!" a gigantic crowd of Morsi protesters, who were holding a sit-in protests around?Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, chanted, reported the BBC.
Morsi, who was elected by a narrow margin in June 2012 in the country's first democratic vote, has been hidden from the public since he was ejected from power. On Friday, Mena news agency reported he would be detained for 15 days while a judge investigated allegations against him. This is his first formal detention since he was ousted, Al Jazeera reported.
Hussein Malla / AP
Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.
According to Reuters, the probe stems from charges that he conspired with Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to escape jail during the 2011 uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak, killing prisoners and officers, kidnapping soldiers, and lighting buildings on fire.
"At the end of the day, we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. was "deeply concerned" by reports that Morsi had been ordered to be detained for more than two weeks.
"We of course are deeply concerned by reports that an Egyptian court has ordered the detention of Mr. Morsi," she said. "I can't speak to the specific charges, but we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work towards his release. Clearly this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt, and that's where our focus is."
A Reuters witness said thousands of pro-Morsi activists clashed with pro-army protesters in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, with some demonstrators hurling stones down on the crowds from nearby rooftops.
The army has warned it will ?turn its guns? on those who use violence in the protests, Reuters reported, while the Brotherhood has said civil war is a possibility.
On Friday morning, several hundred pro-army supporters gathered in Tahrir Square, the central rallying place two years ago for Egyptians. By night, after the evening prayer marking the end of the day?s Ramadan fast, the crowd had grown to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, in the square, according to the BBC.
A banner across one entrance to Tahrir Square read, "The people, the source of all power, mandate the army and police to purge terrorism," the BBC said.
Pro-army demonstrations were planned throughout Egypt. Morsi backers had also announced a large amount of rallies, with 34 in the Cairo area alone, Reuters said.
Hassan Ammar / AP
Egyptian soldiers stand guard atop an armored personnel vehicle on a bridge that leads to Tahrir Square on Friday.
UN leader Ban Ki-moon called on Egyptians to protest peacefully and asked the interim leadership to ensure security, reported Al Jazeera.
But casualties appeared likely after a month in which nearly 200 people, mostly supporters of Morsi, have died, according to Al Jazeera.?
The West has become increasingly alarmed by the course the country of 84 million people has taken. Washington this week said it delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies," reported Reuters.
The U.S. has not made a determination on whether a military coup took place in Egypt, which avoids a decision on whether U.S. aid should be cut off to Egypt.
"It is not in our national interest to make such a determination," State Department spokeswoman Psaki said on Friday, adding the law didn't require that a formal determination be made.?
If the administration were to determine a coup had occurred when Morsi was ousted, the $1.5 billion of military and economic assistance the U.S. provides Egypt would be required by law to stop.?
NBC's Catherine Chomiak and Reuters contributed to this report.

Phil Fish, the creator of celebrated indie video game Fez, is notorious for voicing angry, controversial opinions about the state of video games and their development. Today, however, he seems to have ragequit on the entire video gaming community, and has taken the sequel to Fez down with him. On his Twitter account and on developer Polytron's website, Fish has announced that Fez II has been canceled.
Polygon and Joystiq both independently confirmed with Fish that it's not a joke: the game is no more. Developer Polytron also confirmed the cancellation in a tweet to its followers, writing "we apologize for the disappointment."
"Compare your life to mine and then kill yourself."
What happened? It's not clear, and Fish writes that it "isn't the result of any one thing," but the game's cancellation did come at the end of an unprecedented tussle on Twitter. GameTrailers host Marcus "AnnoyedGamer" Beer and Fish got into an argument after Beer called Fish a "hipster," a "tosspot," a "wanker" and a "fucking asshole" on yesterday's episode of Invisible Walls, a GameTrailers video podcast, after Fish refused to answer questions about Microsoft's decision to allow indie developers to self-publish on Xbox One. Fish then lashed out at Beer, claiming that the GameTrailers host had assassinated his character, telling Beer to "compare your life to mine and then kill yourself," and asking him to apologize on camera.
The argument culminated with Fish writing "im done. FEZ II is canceled. goodbye," and locking his Twitter account.
Phil Fish's struggles to bring the original Fez to market were chronicled in Indie Game: The Movie, a documentary film which debuted last summer.

UFC on Fox 8's Michael Chiesa has a magnificent beard. A Grizzly Adams-esque, mountain man, perhaps even Tom-Hanks-in-Castaway beard. But you know who isn't a fan of that beard? His opponent on Saturday.
Jorge Masvidal is concerned he might catch something from the beard.
"I'm going to tell the commission to wrap that thing up," Masvidal said to MMA Junkie. "I don't want to get no mat herpes or nothing on my face. I've been in this game a long time, and I ain't got nothing on my face. I ain't about catch some syphilis or whatever he's got going on in that beard, you know?"
It's not completely out of line for a fighter to ask for hair to be held back during fights. Gray Maynard did for his bout with Clay Guida, but that was about Guida's long hair, not a beard. Is it possible Masvidal is just trying to mess with Chiesa's head before their fight? If so, Chiesa is not paying attention to it.
"To my fans, I refuse to talk [expletive] in interviews to get attention. I'll do my talking, Saturday night under the lights," Chiesa tweeted.

On Thursday, the Times of Israel quoted Mattis as saying last week, "I paid a military security price every day as the commander of CentCom (Central Command) because the Americans were seen as biased in support of Israel."
The retired US commander made the comments at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado in response to a question regarding the talks between the Tel Aviv regime and the Palestinian Authority.
Mattis further slammed the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, stating that the situation in Israel is "unsustainable."
The chances for an agreement between Israelis and Palestinians "are starting to ebb" due to the settlement activities, Mattis said.
On Thursday, Israeli Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom said the talks may begin in Washington next week.
The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has rejected a proposal by US Secretary of State John Kerry for the resumption of the talks, saying it "considers the Palestinian Authority's return to negotiations with the occupation to be at odds with the national consensus."
The Palestinian-Israeli talks were halted in September 2010 over disagreements on Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian Authority had previously demanded that Israel cease all settlement activities before talks can be resumed. The Tel Aviv regime has refused to do so.

As I promised yesterday, I will write more of my own thoughts and offer up less of other people?s material.? Let Misha, our Newsletter Editor, know if that is what you want at mhanson@milesfranklin.com.
There is scientific evidence that people tend to think that bad things happen to other people but not to them.? An example of that mindset is that people still smoke even though they know that over 400,000 people will die this year from smoking, and there are warnings on the cigarette packs and from the media.
?
?
But they rationalize, ?It happens to others, but it won?t happen to me.?? The same phenomenon happens in the market place too.? ?Other people will lose money by choosing the wrong investments or stocks but it won?t happen to me.?? This is a commonplace mindset.
I certainly fall into that camp, and so do many of our readers.? Not about the smoking part ? I had my last cigarette nearly 30 years ago, but it does pertain to the investing part.? I am steadfast in my belief that my views are right about gold and silver, the fall of the dollar and the risk of owning common stocks and bonds.? I write daily about doing what I do is safe and the other guys are at risk.? Of course the ?other guys? take the other side and are certain they are not at risk and us precious metal ?nuts? are the ones whose investments are at risk.
This does not explain which side is right or wrong, but it does explain why the two sides hold firmly onto differing views.? We humans are hard wired to think in this manner.? ?The danger does NOT apply to ME!?
Another part of the research suggests that it is normal for people to see the ?worst? possibility for others, but it doesn?t apply to them.? This is another theme we encounter in our daily life.? Others will die of cancer and heart attacks.? Others will be raped or mugged.?? Others will be involved in a car accident.? Others will lose their money in stocks, bonds, or even gold and silver.? It always happens to others, but not to us.? I know it?s crazy, but that?s the way we all are wired. ?Well, not everyone; my wife, bless her huge loving heart, is always worried ?it?s going to happen to us, and especially the children and grandchildren.? I really don?t know what this ?It? is (don?t I sound like Bill Clinton), but she does and it?s always a different ?it.?? When I point out to her that there is nothing to worry about, we are fine financially, the kid?s marriages are going well, the kids are happy and healthy? she says, ?But there?s always cancer.?? What can ya do?? I never worry, she always worries.? I can never win the battle, but for short periods of time.
What does all of this have to do with investing in gold and silver?? A lot!? We all have our beliefs that we are doing it right and are out of harms way.? I ?know? that owning gold and silver is the right thing to do and the safest place to have my money.? Backwoods Jack (and most of the MSM) thinks us Goldbugs are ?Wingnuts,? and the real safety (and profitability) is in common stocks.? Backwoods and I fight like cats and dogs over this issue and the pendulum swings back and forth.? For a period, I?m right and lately he?s been right.? But who is really ?right??? It doesn?t matter, in a sense, because whatever we embrace, our subconscious will tell us that harm will only come to the OTHER view.? Even when we are wrong, we think we are right.
It?s difficult, because being right or wrong is not a constant; it changes over time.? That is why it is so difficult for those of us who own gold and silver or those who don?t want to figure out what the best course of action is.? Our hardwiring works against us, and the back and forth price swings make it even more confusing.
That is why I spend so much time researching and writing about the importance of understanding The Primary Trend and The Big Picture.? The day to day noise only adds confusion and either (1) reinforces our views, if we are making money, and (2) strengthens our resolve, in spite of evidence to the contrary, we are still right.? Back to my favorite Richard Prior statement, to his wife who came home and found him in bed with another women ? ?Do you believe me or your lying eyes??
Our capacity to delude ourselves is endless.? The question is, and this IS THE QUESTION, ?Is the bull market in gold over??? The short-term price movements will not give us the answer.? If there is an answer to be found, it will be The Primary Trend and The Big Picture, and the fundamentals.
I have concluded that I AM RIGHT!? Well, that?s to be expected.? I?ve just written why we all think that way.? But really, I AM RIGHT.? I don?t believe my ?lying eyes.?? I don?t care that gold is down some 30% in the last two years.? I don?t care if gold is down 26% in the last 20 months.? Well, actually I do care and it really pisses me off, but it does not dent my belief in gold one bit.? Not as long as ?
(1)? Congress keeps borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars every year, with absolutely no end in sight.
(2)? ?The Fed keeps printing money to buy the debt and hold interest rates to near zero, below the inflation rate.
(3)? The BRIC countries move toward trading between each other outside of the dollar.
(4)? Gold and silver are selling for less than the cost of production.
(5)? China and Russia are buying up as much physical gold as they can find on the market, and the lower the price the more frantic their buying becomes.
(6)? Central banks (led by the Fed) keep leasing hundreds of tonnes of gold into the market, through the bullion banks, to hold the price down, artificially.? That can only last for a while, it will come to an end, and then?
(7)? Because Backwoods Jack thinks I?m an idiot and that comforts me because what the Heck does he know anyway (outside his profession that is)?? I would be much more concerned if he agreed with me!
(8)? Many of the brightest people I know agree with my view of the economy and the precious metals markets, including Jim Sinclair, Richard Russell, Eric Sprott, Bill Holter, Andy Hoffman, Ted Butler, Bill Murphy and Chris Powell, Doug Casey, James Turk, Jim Willie, Jim Cook and many others..
(9)? Germany asked for 300 tonnes back, their gold stored at the Federal Reserve.? We said, ?O.k. we will return it over the next seven years.? Seven years??? If they had it, why take seven years?? You should think about that and perhaps draw the conclusion that gold really is in short supply, physical gold that is.
We can?t all be wrong.? Most of us have spent at least three or four decades involved in this industry and we all see pretty much the same thing here.? Oh, there are differences in opinion.? Some say manipulation is the only reason gold isn?t already priced in the thousands and silver isn?t well above $100 an ounce.? Others say it?s just normal market swings, corrections and cycles.? But all agree we are headed toward those lofty prices and all of us use most of or all of the reasons I have listed above.
There can be NO doubt that for now, JPMorgan is the elephant in the room that controls the price of paper gold and silver.? It used to be Goldman Sachs.? I like to group them together.? They are the Evil Wall Street Twins.? But luck is on our side now because JPM is very LONG in gold and silver and JPM never seems to be wrong.? They are investing with expectations that gold and silver will RISE, not fall and they MAKE the market.? They will continue to make the market until (1) the CFTC says they can?t, which doesn?t seem likely, or (2) the physical market takes over due to supply/demand shortages in the physicals.? That can happen and in fact is in the process of actually happening right now.? China (and India and Russia and some of the Arab states) are behind this change and it is really powerful and it is growing.
So now you know everything that counts.? You know what you believe and you are right (which ever way you believe) and you know how to justify believing in gold and silver.? Will you be right?? I say absolutely, as long as you believe the way I do.
Telling it like it is
A lot of people really like what I have to say.? Why is that?? If you want brilliant insight, amazing research or unfailing investment advice there are many other sources of information.? I hired Andy Hoffman and Bill Holter to offer you some of the finest information in our market place and they do.? So why bother to read what I write?
Well, here is what I believe I bring to the table.? I have worked in the precious metals industry for 30 years.? For the last 30 years, I have spent hours a day searching out the finest information I could find, and 20 of those years were before the Internet. I had to pay for the information and it was weekly or monthly, not daily, like it is now.
I learned about the economy and precious metals the hard way, with serious effort and devotion.
I also started and head up a highly respected precious metals firm that does, in a good year, some $200 million in business ? starting from nothing in 1990.? As a broker and the owner of a fine successful firm, with 30 years of hands on experience, I?ve developed a feel for our industry, our clients and readers needs.? I was one of the first in the precious metals industry to offer an educational newsletter (much copied since) and focus it on educating our clients.? We wrote about why they needed gold, beyond the all too common promise of profit.? Actually, profit is low on the list, but the ?why? is more important than the ?what,? as in what to buy.
But even more important, if you have followed my newsletter for even a short period of time, you know that I write from the heart!? I don?t B.S!? To my conservative readers, please forgive the reference to BS, but I am telling it like it is and exactly the way I feel about it.? I may not know everything or every twist and turn in the road, but I do have one seldom-found ability that I offer to my readers; I am moral and honest, to a fault.
Sure, I run a business, and we need to make a profit to exist, but I make sure that our pricing favors our clients, not our bottom line.? The bottom line is what is left.? Profit is not a goal; it?s what?s left over after doing things the RIGHT way. Many in our industry have a totally different business model.? I once asked the very successful owner of a precious metals firm, ?Why do you charge so much??? He replied, ?Why do you charge so little??? Simple, because making money was never my main goal when I founded Miles Franklin.? Sure, I wanted to earn enough to have a great life style, but beyond that, money was not a motivator.? Actually I wanted a lot of free time, minimal stress and the ability to do what I like, which is why I read, research and write.? I had enough of the ?sales? end of it for the first 20 years.
I would never ever suggest that anyone, especially our readers and clients, do anything that I do not do (and my son Andy feels exactly the same way).? Our financial ?chips? are all in, gold, silver and platinum.
I believe in what I write and am certain that what I say is the way it is.? Sometimes the prices don?t agree with the story, but the last few chapters of the book have not yet been written.? However, if you are smart enough, you know how a book or a movie will end before the end ? if you pay attention.
I try not to speak down to my readers.? I talk to you like I would talk to my best friend, my family or my next-door neighbor.? Straight, no-B.S. conversation, from the heart with your best interest foremost in mind, and no ulterior motives beyond that.? Is this the best way to write a newsletter?? Some of you think so and many probably don?t.? Hey, that?s o.k.? Read Andy Hoffman, Bill Holter, and I would say Jim Sinclair and Richard Russell, but they could well say the same things I just said, and all of us would mean the same.? Some of us tell it like it is and hope we are right, actually assume we are right, and that?s what we do; that?s all that counts.
I say, good honest advice that puts YOU first is uncommon.? I don?t sell subscriptions.? Most of the people that read our reports probably buy from other gold dealers.? I?m o.k. with that, but I would really appreciate it if you gave us a chance to earn your business.
In my company, the people who work for me are honest, knowledgeable and will really treat you well ? or I won?t keep them around.? My name is on the masthead.? I am the Miles of Miles Franklin.? The Franklin hasn?t been around since 1994 and was never involved in the business other than as an investor.? I bought him out nearly 20 years ago.? My self-respect is, to a large degree, based on how my firm treats YOU.? I set it up that way and it will never change, not as long as I am involved.? That?s a promise!
If you follow my advice, this much I can assure you ? we will both sink or swim together.? I know firsthand that there are other firms in our industry where the owners and the brokers own no gold and silver, or very little.? How can anyone sell something that they don?t believe in enough to own it themself? I couldn?t do it, but perhaps I am somewhat unique in that regard.
What more do you want?? We give you great information.? We price our products as low as we possibly can.? We keep our overhead low so we can do this and management does NOT take ridiculous salaries.? Actually we take very small salaries, and what is left at the end of the year is our ?profit.?? We are honest and we care about what we say and how it affects you.? We believe completely in what we sell and invest probably way too much of our own money in the products that we sell.? We believe our own story!
In a world that no one can promise you how the future will play out, at least we ourselves believe in our interpretation of the facts and we do invest our own money accordingly.
Now I think that is a lot to offer, and it?s actually, rather rare.? But what counts is what YOU think.? So, what do you think?? Are we worth a conversation so you can judge for yourself?? If you think so, our toll free number is (800) 822-8080.
Your ever-humble servant,
David

I consider it my job (well, I guess it is my job) to track the clusterfuck of sex surveys and data inundating the interwebs and bring you the results. (Because I know you are just sitting around WAITING to find out what kind of car people most like to have a quickie in.) According to a survey of 2,018 adults done by car manufacturer BBA Reman (and why they were doing a sex survey, we?ll never know, but they did), 49 percent of Britons have had sex in a car at least once. OK, not shocking. But wait. Here?s the shocking part: Of those 49 percent who?ve done car sex, 27 percent said their preferred model was a Ford Fiesta, closely followed by a Volkswagon Golf. Seriously? Those are some tiny ass cars. It?s hard to imagine fitting one person in the backseat, let alone two. It?d be like fucking in a pistachio shell. If posed with this question myself, I?d have picked something more like a Hummer, just so I could move my legs, not because I support the gas-guzzling beasts.?
Moving onto the next weird sex tidbit, staff members at the Houston Press must have been very bored, because they decided to put flavored condoms on bananas and do taste tests. Not only did they taste eight varietals of condoms, but they reviewed and ranked them all. And the winner was?strawberry! ?They?re a little sweet and a little tart and not super latex-y, which is exactly what a flavored condom should be,? they write. Durex?s tropical flavored condom, which was described as ?pineapple-esque? with a little bit of ?mango?came in second. We?ll keep that in mind next time we?re screwing in the back of a Ford Fiesta.

The mayor of Huntingdon, Quebec Stephane Gendron drew criticism two years ago when he said in a television interview that Israel "does not deserve to exist." Now, he's facing fire for boasting on air that he runs over cats and even newborn kittens with his truck in an effort to control the stray cat population in his neighborhood.
"When I see a cat in the street, I accelerate," Gendron said recently on his French-language radio show.
"First of all, cats have no business being in the road. It's a stray cat when it's in the road and BANG I accelerate," Gendron said according to a CTV translation.
Kitten BurglarThe Canadian Press reports that he didn't stop there.
"The other day I backed up over a newborn and I'm sure it didn't feel a thing," Gendron said. "The pickup passed over him like it was nothing."
Canadian Press reports that an on-air colleague called his comments "sick."
Gendron's words are also being condemned by the SPCA which says it's planning to investigate. CTV reports that under Canadian law, willfully harming an animal is punishable by up to five years in prison.
That threat prompted the mayor of the town of 2,450 to issue an online apology in which he attributed his "largely exaggerated" comments to "dark humor."
Stephane-Gendron-CanadaStray cats have been a pet peeve for the mayor/radio host even before this latest controversy. The Huntingdon town council recently adopted a bylaw requiring cat owners to sterilize their pets, according to Canadian media reports.
"On July 9, 2013, I made largely exaggerated comments on the overpopulation of cats that constitutes a nuisance in our urban and rural areas," Gendron's clarification statement said according to CP.
"I myself have to deal with this problem on my property, with many dozens of stray cats that come and cause problems," he said.
"I admit that the imagery used served no purpose in advancing the debate on this issue...For all these reasons, I apologize. The use of dark humor was inappropriate in dealing with such a subject," the Canadian mayor added.
Gendron also said that small towns like his don't have animal shelters and that euthanizing every stray by a veterinarian is unaffordable.
CP points out that Gendron in his statement did not say flat out if his stories about running over kittens were truthful or just dramatic exaggeration.
That's apparently irrelevant for the SPCA which says it is now in the process of searching for those who may have evidence to his admitted cruelty to animals.
"(We're) obviously shocked and horrified to hear something like that - coming from anybody, but particularly from someone like that who has a platform," SPCA Montreal spokeswoman Alanna Devine tells CP.
"Someone who has a radio show and who is an elected public official -- (we're) absolutely horrified," she adds.
Even if it turns out that Gendron's stories were in jest, it's still "unacceptable and totally horrendous nonetheless" according to the SPCA spokeswoman.
The mayor's anti-feline sentiments were preceded by a history of anti-Israel expressions.
In a television interview in 2011, Gendron lamented that "unfortunately, Israel has not yet collapsed" and that Israel "does not deserve to exist." His words were publicized to the English speaking media by Honest Reporting Canada, a pro-Israel website that promotes what it describes as fairness and accuracy in reporting on the Middle East.
In that interview, he also termed Israel an "apartheid state."
Here are some of the mayor's controversial comments, excerpted by the Daily Mail:

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday the future of the Voting Rights Act is in "real jeopardy" following the Supreme Court's decision striking down a portion of the law, telling a prominent organization of black women that Congress should act to preserve "fairness and equality" in the nation's voting system.
The former secretary of state was feted with chants of "Run, Hillary, Run," as she concluded her 30-minute remarks to nearly 14,000 members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, an historic black women's organization celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Clinton, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, said the Supreme Court's decision "struck at the heart" of the landmark law and warned that it could undermine Americans' most fundamental rights.
"Unless Congress acts, you know and I know, more obstacles are on their way," Clinton said, walking freely on stage instead of delivering her speech from a podium. "They're going to make it difficult for poor people, elderly people, working people, minority people to be able to do what we should take for granted."
A divided Supreme Court threw out a key part of the landmark Voting Rights Act in June, stripping the government of its best way to prevent voting bias ? the requirement that all or parts of 15 states with a history of discrimination in voting, mostly in the South, get Washington's approval before changing the way they hold elections. The decision has been criticized by civil rights groups who contend it could undermine voting rights in upcoming elections.
"Now the law's future is in real jeopardy and so are the rights of millions of Americans," Clinton said.
Clinton made no mention of any future political plans, saying she intends to promote early childhood development, the rights of women and girls around the globe and economic development in her new role in her family's presidential foundation. In a nod to the sea of women wearing crimson and cream, the organization's colors, Clinton quipped that "in mathematics, delta means change. I think that's pretty fitting."
But her speech emphasized the importance of voting rights for black Americans, who supported Barack Obama in large numbers during their Democratic primary campaign in 2008 and in his re-election last year. Black voters have long supported her husband, President Bill Clinton, and would be a key voting bloc if the former first lady sought the presidency in 2016.
"I want to make sure that in the next election and the next election and the next and every one after that, people line up to vote and they vote regardless of those who may not want to count their vote or acknowledge their right to vote," Mrs. Clinton said.
She cited her work with civil rights leader Dorothy Height, recalled attending a speech by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as a young woman and noted the work of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, a prominent member of the sorority. Clinton said the issue of voting rights resonated after she attended a congressional hearing on the issue with Tubbs Jones in Cleveland following the 2004 elections.
"The idea that in the 21st century African-Americans would wait in line to vote for 10 hours while whites in an affluent precinct next door waited just 10 minutes, or African-Americans would receive fliers telling the wrong time and wrong day to exercise their constitutional rights," Clinton said. "That is not the America we would expect or the America we would want for our children."
Clinton opened her remarks by offering prayers for the family of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teenager who was killed last year, and "with every family who loves someone who is lost to violence." She said the week's developments brought "deep, painful heartache" to many Americans.
"No mother, no father, should ever have to fear for their child walking down a street in the United States of America," Clinton said.
It was her first public comments on the case since George Zimmerman's acquittal in the Martin case. The Justice Department has said it's considering whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges after Zimmerman's acquittal.
Obama met with members of the sorority in the Oval Office earlier in the day, including former Labor Secretary Alexis Herman and Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio.

AMMAN (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday there would be no hasty U.S. decision on whether Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi's ouster constituted a coup, a determination that would affect U.S. aid for Cairo.
"On the issue of a coup, this is obviously an extremely complex and very difficult situation," Kerry told a news conference in Amman, where he held talks with Arab officials.
"The fact is we need to take the time necessary because of the complexity of the situation to evaluate what has taken place ... So that's exactly what we are doing right now, and I'm not going to rush to judgment on it," he said.

?Career prosecutors? at the Justice Department ? without any input from the White House ? will decide whether to file criminal civil rights charges against George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted of murdering Trayvon Martin, says a presidential spokesman.
?This is a decision made by the Justice Department, by career prosecutors, and all questions about how that process is undertaken should be directed there. And that is not something the president involves himself in,? White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Monday. ?As the Justice Department said yesterday (Sunday), they first acknowledged last year that they have an open investigation into Trayvon Martin?s death. And they are continuing to evaluate that evidence.?

Playing for Auburn University was an offer Fort Lauderdale University School quarterback Sean White couldn?t pass up.
After visiting Auburn on Thursday, White said he received an offer from the school?s coaching staff on Tuesday and orally committed without hesitation.
?It?s a dream come true,? said White, rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports and three stars by Rivals in the Class of 2014.
White, who also held reported offers from Cincinnati, South Florida, FIU and interest from Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Ole Miss and Arkansas, said he ?loved everything about? Auburn during his visit, citing the school?s atmosphere and fan base. Playing in the Southeastern Conference, especially against Alabama in the annual Iron Bowl game were also reasons behind White?s decision.
White said winning most valuable player honors at the Elite 11 quarterback competition and Nike?s The Opening event in Beaverton, Ore., earlier this month also helped secure an offer from the Auburn staff.
?I was hearing from Auburn before that,? White said regarding the events, ?but it helped verify the way I can play and the way I can compete with the top quarterbacks in the country.?
White called Auburn coach Gus Malzahn a ?quarterback mastermind,? and said having a hand in winning the school?s third national championship ? and first since 2010 when Cam Newton lead the Tigers past Oregon ? ?would be awesome.?
?I think the fan base deserves [a national championship] and I think we?re going to build a good enough class there,? White said. ?With Guz Malzahn as the coach, I think we?re going to have a shot and you always have a shot playing in the SEC.?

Samsung has been exclusively making chips for Apple's iOS devices since the first iPhone started shipping in 2007 -- we don't need to tell you that makes for an odd relationship. Several months ago, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple would switch to TSMC for next year's iOS portfolio, but now there's some strange news coming out of Korea. According to a local publication, Apple's 2015 iOS devices will use Samsung's 14 nanometer FinFET technology, starting with the iPhone 7 (not the 6S?). Why would Apple switch to TSMC for just one year and then go back to Samsung? Is Apple planning to rely on both TSMC and Samsung for different product lines? Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until Chipworks breaks out its microscopes to find out what's really going on.

Just when we're getting bored of all these static Moto X leaks, a couple of new video clips popped up to finally show off some of the software goodies. The first one appears to be a leaked Rogers promotional video (embedded after the break), in which a nice lady introduces us to a new Google Now voice command feature, which can be toggled with a custom phrase even when the screen is off. According to another clip uploaded by kronikbudz, said feature is called Open Mic, but there's no indication as to whether this will be exclusive to Motorola devices or whether it'll come with the next Android release.
The Rogers video adds that the Moto X will provide ambient "active updates" notifications on the screen when the phone is locked, and this is pitched as a more sensible replacement for the meaningless blinking light. Later on, the same lady demonstrates how one can activate the phone's camera -- even when locked -- by simply twisting the wrist twice. We're a bit worried that this may allow accidental activations, unless the phone can detect whether it is inside a pocket or bag.
Finally, the lady says the Moto X will be "exclusively" heading to Rogers this August in either black or white, thus confirming the "late Summer" window that we were previously told. Enjoy your very own exclusivity while it lasts, Mr. Schmidt!

People hanging out close to the stage at Moscone West, before Apple's WWDC keynote begins.
On Monday at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CEO Tim Cook hosted a keynote that saw the unveiling of a sharp new Mac Pro, new MacBook Air models with better battery life, a streaming Internet radio service and the next operating system for the Mac. But the biggest news of all was most certainly iOS 7 ? the next version of Apple's mobile operating system ? which will bring a whole new experience to iPhone and iPad.
iOS 7 - a complete redesign
After chugging through OS X and new Mac news (here below), Tim Cook cued up a video showing the new iOS, and each shot was met with audible excitement. As we expected, the icons are all flatter, but the system isn't "flat." As you move the device in your hand, it tracks your motion, so there are planes interacting with each other. Translucence aids in the illusion.

Control Center can be reached by swiping up from anywhere in phone.
Notifications are available from the new lock screen. There's a Control Center that lets you get basic stuff, like Bluetooth or Airplane Mode, by just swiping up from anywhere, including other apps. There's even a flashlight option in the Control Center.
As you can quite imagine, the core apps have been redesigned. Calendar, email, weather, they all have this flat, black and white look, characterized by super thin Helvetica font, and accented by bold primary colors. (If you're thinking that sounds a lot like Android and Windows Phone, I'm not going to argue with you.)
Wilson Rothman / NBC News
Mobile Safari has a way to browse tabs like the old "cover flow."
Mobile Safari has a really flat look as well, with a wild "cover flow" like tab scrolling ability, so you can flip through a bunch of open pages really easily. There's also "shared links," a Flipboard-like way to look at stuff your social friends are sharing.
AirDrop lets you share files within a network among iOS devices and Macs. "No need to wander around ? bumping your phone," says Apple software honcho Craig Federighi.
The Photo app is a major focus of the redesign. You can scan photos in all kinds of views, zooming out to see teeny thumbnails. You can apply filters quickly instead of doing painstaking edits, and you can share to AirDrop or Photo Stream. (Bonus: Now other people can share into your Photo Stream ? a big deal for moms and dads, just trying to get pics to the grandparents.)
Siri now has voice options ? you can choose a man if you don't like the lady. It also integrates Wikipedia and Bing search results right inside. Apple Internet services chief Eddie Cue says that Siri for the car ? a larger-screen version designed with many eyes-free options for drivers ? will be available in 2014 models.
You know that pesky red circle that always hangs out on the App Store, telling you how many apps you need to update? It's gone: iOS 7 will update apps automatically. (About time, am I right?)
Wilson Rothman / NBC News
Tim Cook on stage at WWDC 2013.
The Music app will contain iTunes Radio (previously speculated as iRadio) a free streaming music service similar to Pandora. It'll be on iOS 7 devices, and will have ads. But if you subscribe to iTunes Match ($25 per year), it's free. Mac and Apple TV get iTunes Radio, too.
iOS 7 will be available this fall for the following devices: iPhone 4 and newer, iPad 2 and newer, iPad Mini and iPod Touch 5th gen and newer. No more 3GS support, and we never expected it on the original iPad.
OS X Mavericks details
Earlier in the keynote, after a demo of AnkiDrive, a "video game for the real world" that involves race cars shooting each other (crazy!), Cook transitioned to the Mac, and OS X. Federighi first took the stage, teasing OS X Sea Lion ? "OK maybe not" ? then introducing OS X Mavericks. No more big cats.
The new Mac OS gets some tricks from the Web, such as tagging and window tabs. It also has new support for multiple monitors, meaning that things can be opened in full-screen in one monitor without messing around with the other screen. The lack of this irked a lot of people, and compromised the full screen mode that Apple previously boasted about. When you use the Mission Control feature, you can manage all kinds of open apps in a new visual way.

Mac OS X Mavericks calendar ? no fake leather!
Mac OS X Mavericks will also include an iCloud Keychain for managing all your passwords (it even suggests crazy hard ones); the ability to reply to iMessages and other notifications right when they pop up, without having to go into an app; a redesigned calendar that has no stupid fake leather whatsoever; and Maps and iBooks ? two of my least favorite Apple programs.
Federighi also talked about all kinds of under-the-hood power features ? "compressed memory" "GPU video scaling" "timer coalescing" ? that will lead to better battery life on MacBooks and a 1.4X speed improvement.
There are also some new features in Safari, including more jargony stuff that will improve its responsiveness. Accelerated scrolling, across the whole system, is "super fast, super smooth" in Safari.
OS X Mavericks preview goes to developers Monday; customers get it "this fall."

New MacBook Air; sneak peek of Mac Pro
Phil Schiller got on stage to talk about Macs. The new MacBook Airs, though they look the same, will have "all day" battery life, thanks to Intel's new Haswell processor. They're available today.
And Schiller gave everyone a sneak peek of the "Assembled in the USA" Mac Pro desktop computer, a totally redesigned system that's tiny compared to its predecessor, yet monumentally more powerful.
The new system is super fast, with flash memory 10X faster than the previous model's hard drive, Thunderbolt 2 connectivity for external drives and monitors, dual workstation GPUs giving 2.5X better video performance than the last generation, and supports 4K-resolution displays. Pretty hot, especially give then fact that it's a gnome next to the current-gen tower.
