My problems with proposed future game consoles - The Gamer's ...

After watching the BBC?s coverage of E3 I was sadly reminded of where the future video gaming is going, and in my opinion it is will be grave future for me and many gamers, and creating the possibility of the death of Gaming.

So in case you were wondering what my problem is, it is that the gaming industry is extorting their loving fans. The main problem with the ?planned? next generation of consoles is that games are should be assigned to a specific console or account, the first of the problems with these plans is that it will kill off the second hand games market. In these tough economic times large business such as GAME are closing down many stores because the opportunity of second hand games sales will be removed thus meaning these business?s will have to shut down. I personally rely on second hand games to play because I can?t afford the ?50 price tag like many others. Yet I am not at a loss as I can still find a way to play the games I love through second-hand games and pay the developers by buying the already pricey downloadable add-ons. Second hand games also allow me to find games that didn?t get much press or were released when I hadn?t noticed. That?s how I found great games such as Jericho, Prey and Frontlines: fuel of war. These great games would no longer be on shelves if it wasn?t for second hand sales. There is also an anomaly in the industry, why do games have such short life spans?! I can?t find Half Life 2 or the Orange Box in any physical shop, these games are massive almost everyone I know has at some point owned or download these games.

Another big problem is multiple gamers on a single console, this would mean that those users would have to buy the same game multiple times, this is not right!

A major problem with the future generations of consoles is that all games may go to a strictly digital format, I would hate this. Firstly I love physical media, secondly I feel that if I pay for something I should actually get something to hold, this would kill off collectors editions of games, where other physical items are grouped with the physical media. Another problem is that digital downloads take up so much storage space on a hard drive, for example fallout new Vegas is 8GB for download then every DLC is another 1GB and on top of that the saves are massive, my hard drive would be full 10 times over if I had all my games digitally downloaded.

Recently I have found that developers are finding ways to make money off second hand games, my experience with this was Assassins Creed: Revelations. I put in the disk and wanted to jump into multiplayer when I was halted by a message saying ?please enter you Uplay passport or buy one for 800MS points (roughly ?8)? I was filled with rage, I had brought every assassins creed game before, and am already saving for AC3, but because I had little money and saw a great deal they punish me for it. It is not right that even after I pay for something I still have to pay extra for something built into the disk. Then I was further enraged with a message I received from them saying (in short) ?we recognize you as a loyal member from playing the previous game have a free item that does nothing?, if you recognize me as a loyal member why do you wish to rip me off?

Something else was mentioned about the future of games that I am undecided on so far, it is game streaming. I have experienced this before with a program called Onlive, this allowed me to instantly play games with practically no lag, the advantages of this is not having to download or install games so saving space, Onlive allows you to watch other peoples game plays live for free, this may appeal to people who love games but don?t have time to play them. The downside to streaming is that if you don?t have a high speed internet connection the game will be slow and lag, this will ruin game play, this is the main reason I?m undecided.

Overall I think that the next generation of consoles will kill the gaming world if they go the way they are planned. I know I don?t have the full picture yet but with the information currently available this is what I think and many of you will too. I want to know how you feel, if you agree or if you disagree with me and how it will affect your choice in buying the next gen consoles.
