A celebrity product review | Jersey Dog | NorthJersey.com

The product: Petco's seersucker Pup Crew dress

A few weeks ago, Petco sent me a few of its spring products, including an itty-bitty dog dress. Normally I make my own dog try out things for product reviews, but since he weighs 65 pounds, I asked a canine celebrity to do the honors instead: Lucy, the world?s smallest working dog.

Lucy, a Yorkshire terrier who lives in Absecon, N.J., weighs less than 3 pounds. She also has a wardrobe full of dresses made by her owner, Sally Leone Montufar, that she wears while volunteering as a therapy dog.

With her size and modeling experience, Lucy seemed like a perfect fit for this reader road test. So I mailed Sally the dress and emailed her some questions, along with a reminder that she was under no obligation to like it.

My main concern was that the XXS dress might actually be too big on Lucy. To get perspective on how small she is, check out this Guinness Book of World Records photo of her by Howie Williams.

On Wednesday, I got my answer. Here?s what Sally had to say about this product:

OK, we?re dying to know. How do you like it?

?I love the dress,? Sally told me by email. ?The nautical theme happens to be my favorite for this Jersey Girl, along with the blue-and-white color scheme. The little flounce on the bottom is also flattering. The bow is on the side and gives it an adorable and more interesting look.?

Is the fit accurate?

?The size is XXS,? she said. ?However, my dog is unusually tiny, and in this garment she would be an XXXS.?

She thinks the dress would be true to size on an ?average-size Yorkie,? though. ?Yorkies vary greatly, and some would certainly be in the larger-size XS,? she said.

Well, that?s good news. Was it hard to get the dress on Lucy?

The dress is ?easy to put on and stays on, even though the straps are too big for her,? Sally said. Here?s the photo:

What a cutie patootie.

Well, she looks adorable, even if it is a tad loose. And doesn?t she have her own personal seamstress?

Yep. ?I make my own clothes for Lucy,? Sally said. Which means that she can alter the dress to fit her ?very hard-to-fit little one.?

This dress costs $14.99. How?s the quality?

?Excellent,? she said. ?The serger secures the seams, and things are matched up.?

Huzzah! Hey, maybe it will shrink in the wash, and then it will fit Lucy perfectly. Or fall to pieces ?

Sally?s got that angle covered. ?I have washed the dress and it?s holding up fine and dandy,? she reported. ?But I did take an iron to it, only because I?m picky.?

Picky? Maybe. Gracious? Definitely:

?Thank you for this opportunity to try this dress, and I am thrilled it is now part of her wardrobe,? she concluded. ?Make my size??

Your move, Petco.
